Nong Khai, Thailand (Mini Guide)
Nong Khai, one of Udon Thani's closest neigbouring towns, is a pretty little place on the banks of the mighty Mekong River, which divides Thailand and Laos. The town lies just 55km's north of Udon Thani and is popular for it's indo-china market 'Tha Sadet', annual rain season rocket festivals and of course the Serpants fire (Naga fireballs), which can be seen arising from the Mekong river on last day of buddist lent every year.
Once a sleepy border town, the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge transformed Nong Khai into one of the busiest commercial centers in the region. Yet, it has still retained its peacful riverside charm.
Nong Khai is popluar for both travelers passing through and expats retiring and living there. There are several tourist attractions near by, Sala Kaeo Ku, 2km's from the town centre, is an amazing buddist sculpture park, housing a huge collection of buddist images, all built to tell a story.
A little further out of town is Wat Phu Tok, the work of a Buddist Mystic who built a wooden staircase to the top. It rises seven levels symbolising the seven steps to enlightenment, from the top there are amazing views of the Mekong River valley.
Amongst the town you will find many temples, interesting craft and book shops, and markets.

"BANG FAI PHAYA NAGA" Article By TAT Thailand
OCTOBER 21, 2002 in Thailand (Actual date may vary from year to year)
Every now and again, reddish-pink elliptical balls of light with an eerie glow rise silently into the pitch-black night sky, without a flare, smoke or sound.
Known as the "Bang Fai Phaya Naga", the King of Naga fire-balls is a natural phenomenon that generally takes place on the full moon night of the 11th lunar month, the last night of the Buddhist Lent.
