udon golfThe climate of Thailand makes golf one of the perfect pastimes to get a little exercise and socialize with friends. For those of us from colder climates we no longer need worry about the weather spoiling arrangements for a round of golf. Here the only concern is the odd day of continuous heavy rain during the wet season.

Golf is big business in Thailand, bringing tourists from all over the world to enjoy its beautiful courses. Here in Udon Thani, golf is a little bit more low key than the popular resorts down south, but there is still sufficient interest from expats and tourists to support the local Udon Thani Golf Society.

There has been a golf society in Udon for around 10 years. Originally called, Friends of Udon Golf Society, it was renamed Udon Golf Society about 6 years ago and was until his recent retirement, very well organized by Malcolm Mackenzie, with the help of Trevor Edge.

During this time the Society has held, with the help of local bars sponsoring a days golf, numerous fund raising events. Two of the main beneficiaries of these charity days has been The Nong Khai Orphan Boys Home, The Udon Thani Home for retarded children along with various local schools. The last charity fun day was held at Wing 23 golf course on the 30th December and attracted 72 players.

The Golf Society has members from all over the world who either live or visit Udon Thani. The societies aim is to provide a means for local golfers to get together and enjoy themselves. If they happen to have a good round of golf, that’s an added bonus.
Whilst the Society has a laid back friendly approach, all players are expected to strictly adhere to the rules of golf as laid down by the governing bodies.

The Society has players of all abilities. The maximum handicap for men is 32 and for ladies 36. The present handicap list has
17 players in the 0-9 category, 67 in the 10-19 category, 41 in the 20-29 category and 30 in the 30-36 category.
A yearly subscription of 500baht is required to join the society.

The Society usually plays on a Monday at one of the following 3 courses.

Sri Thani.
An attractive 9 hole course with plenty of trees and water. The two par 5’s are key to a good round. Recently the condition of the greens has improved dramatically, having previously been over sanded. The club house does have showers and lockers.    A massage service has recently been provided to ease those post round aches and pains.
Cost of a round is 360 baht plus caddy tip.

Wing 23.
A popular 9 hole course near the centre of town. There are continuous ongoing course improvements to fairways and greens. Recent irrigation work has added to the problem of wayward drives. The club house has limited changing room facilities.
Cost of a round is 300 baht plus caddy tip.

Victory Park, Nong Khai.
The only 18 hole course in the area and always worth the trip there. Very picturesque, out in the middle of Issan countryside.
The course has previously been host to televised major Thai golf tournaments. The greens are very undulating and putting is key to a good round. Nice clubhouse with showers and lockers.
Cost of a round, with society, is 600 baht on a Monday, plus caddy tip. 500 baht on sporstday.
