118th Year Anniversary of Udon Thani Province

Postby parrot » January 12, 2011, 8:42 pm

No, not Trubrit's anniversary........but Udon's.
It's on the 18th of January......and according to some very sparse information at http://www.udclick.com/home1/index.php? ... mid=127041 there'll be a fireworks display. No time or place given, but if I run across that info, I'll post it here.

My wife's a participant. Limited info, only what she has heard at practice. She says the monk's kick it off about 6 AM on the 18th and goes into the evening with music & fireworks. Location is at Prince Prajak monument circle (2nd traffic circle).

Thank you Parrot. No not quite, just 76th this year, but who knows, I just might be around for my 118th.If some jealous husband doesn't pop me off before . :lol: ;
A little bit of info on topic . This is an annual event on the 18th January to commemorate the founding of Udon by Prince Prajak in 1893. Traditionally the ladies of the town dance around his monument. Anyone can volunteer to be one of the dancers, but normally those who feel they need a bit more luck in their lives are in the majority as it is thought by doing so, they will improve their lot in the next year. They simply have about a weeks rehearsal beforehand, in fact if you have been in town over the last few days, you will have seen them at City Hall doing their thing . The firework display takes place naturally, at Nong Prajak park, in the evening.
In case anyone didn't realise this event means the complete closure of the roads around the Statue all day .

mak,
From http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthrea ... &page=1108
Your wife may give you a better idea of the schedule, but here's what I see:

Big religious ceremony beginning at 6:00AM at the statue circle. Governor, cops, military, reps will all be there along with spouses. It doesn't say how long the ceremony will last.....but if I were a betting man, I'd detour rather than chance getting hung up on Srisuk going toward the statue circle (the pits!)

The formalities are normally over by midday but the area stays congested most of the day as people go there to offer flower garlands to the statue. The later congestion will be at Nong Prajak park for the firework display in the evening .

Just a sequel to the event. I was asked to help a documentary team filming the event, by doing a few interviews with the dancers. Naturally when they learned of the bringing good luck aspect that was the focus of the questions. Not to my surprise the much older ladies were , in the main, hoping to win the lottery, whilst the younger, below 40'sh girls were more interested in finding a farang husband. The latter might have been prompted by the two farang filming, who were typical Scandinavians, young blue eyed and blond hair .Although an old guy like me, did get a few offers, until I revealed I was spoken for. When you think about it, marrying a farang is about the same as winning the lottery
Yes , as mentioned on another thread. The fireworks in the evening were a fabulous show, although I do personally wonder about the cost and whether the money could have been put to better purpose . :-"

A video of the fireworks show is at

A friend tells me Ayuthaya won the fireworks competition.

mac, judging by the 3000++ people at the circle in the morning, I'll guess you had to take a detour.

119th Year Anniversary of Udon Thani Province

Postby trubrit » January 12, 2012, 10:07 am

Didn't want to start a new thread so resurrected last years as most of the info is still current .Next Wednesday the 18th, celebrations for Udon's 119th Anniversary take place commencing with dancing round the Prince Prajak roundabout starting at 6.00am until midday, so no traffic is allowed. followed by a firework display and a concert over the next two days, 19/20th in Nong Prajak park .If your not driving in the area you will enjoy the spectacle.
