Cholesterol-Lowering Medications

Taking cholesterol-lowering medications can cause serious sexually related side-effects including decreased sexual desire and impotence.

As published in Family Practice, a 2002 systematic review of the literature on erectile dysfunction (ED) and lipid-lowering drugs found that the evidence supports the link between both statins, like Lipitor and Zocor, and fibrates, like TRICOR, and ED.

While some people can not forgo these types of medications, it is good practice to find natural ways to lower your cholesterol. This doesn’t have to mean a rigorous workout in the gym, you can help reduce your cholesterol levels by simply opting to walk to those nearby places you would usually drive to.

Antidepressants

Antidepressants effect the brain circuits involved in love and lust, decreasing your sex drive and impairing one’s ability to achieve an orgasm. This is especially true with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Zoloft, Prozac, and Paxil.

These types of drugs can also cause ejaculatory disturbances and impotence in males.

It is thought that because antidepressants may have a negative effect on dopamine, a brain chemical involved in lust and attraction, they may also effect the ability to fall in love.

High Blood Pressure Medication

Although these medications are essential to some for controlling blood pressure levels, they also have very undesirable sexual side-effects.

High blood pressure meds can cause impotence, ejaculatory disturbances and decreased sex drive. So its best to seek alternative ways of lowering your blood pressure.

Eat a healthy diet, primarily one low in dairy, saturated fat, and sodium. Seek to lose weight if you’re overweight. Exercise regularly. Don’t smoke, and limit your alcohol intake.

Birth Control Pills

The very pills that are supposed to allow women more freedom in the bedroom, may actually be responsible for draining a woman’s libido and sexual pleasure.

A 2006 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that women who take the pill have a significantly lower libido than those who don’t.

This is partly because the pill increases the production of SHBG (sex-hormone binding globulin), a protein that binds sexual hormones. Birth control pills can also cause vaginal dryness and decreased lubrication during sex.

If you feel that taking birth control pills maybe decreasing your sex drive, you could try using other forms of contraceptive like diaphragms or condoms.

And as with any of the drugs mentioned above, if you suspect they are having a negative impact on your sexual drive or performance, you should consult a physician.


And before anyone suggest it, no I don't have a problem. , but thought it might be interesting reading for anyone who does.

High cholesterol can be helped with exercise and diet. Especially important is to eat more fresh fruits and veggies everyday.

High Blood Pressure Drugs Not Likely to Cause ED

Some families of high blood pressure drugs rarely cause ED as a side effect. They include:

* ACE inhibitors
* Alpha-blockers
* Calcium channel blockers
* ARBs

ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors -- such as Lotensin, Capoten, Zestril, Prinivil, etc. -- widen blood vessels and increase blood flow. Erectile dysfunction is rarely a side effect, occurring in less than 1% of patients. There are several different medications in this category. This seems to be true of all of them.

There are also medications known as calcium channel blockers, such as Diltiazem, Verapamil, or Amlodipine. As a group, they rarely cause erectile dysfunction. But erection problems may be less common with some individual drugs within that group than with others. Your doctor can tell you which.

In general, alpha-blockers do not often cause erection problems either. In one study, a small number of men actually had a 100% improvement in their erectile dysfunction after two years on the alpha-blocker Cardura.

Drugs known as ARBs (angiotensin II receptor blockers, like Losarten) are not only unlikely to cause erection problems, but they may actually improve sexual function in men with high blood pressure.

A 2001 study published in the American Journal of the Medical Sciences looked at the drug Cozaar, an ARB. At first, just 7% of men and women in the study said they felt sexually satisfied overall. After 12 weeks of Cozaar, about 58% said they were sexually satisfied. The percentage of men who reported having erectile dysfunction dropped from 75% to 12%.

Another study compared the drug Diovan, an ARB, with Coreg, a beta-blocker. The study, published in the American Journal of Hypertension in 2001, compared the effect of the two drugs on blood pressure and frequency of sexual intercourse.

The drugs controlled blood pressure equally well. But people who took the ARB reported having sex more often during the 16 weeks of treatment. They said they had sex about eight times a month before, and 10 times a month after. People taking the beta-blocker had sex much less often: eight times a month before, and four times a month after.

This thread is getting really weird. 747 are you talking the same doctor, or the same Mrs?

THINK About it Jack, My Doctor firstly seems Aardvark AND I are both on the SAME Medication ,AND Not Aards Missus,.............MINE....Now you got me
