Winning the toss and the Ozzies not playing a spinner turned out to be the difference between winning and losing the Ashes.

I think credit should go to Sky Sports. Their list of commentators are excellent now. Very professional, knowledgeable and entertaining. Always enjoy listening to Bumble, Sir Ian can be a bit of a twot sometimes. Enjoyed listening to Mr Warne. Good insight from the Australian perspective and sometimes amusing.

2 years time i hope we can avoid the white wash. :D

Warne was excellent, as you said, Sir Ian, is always a delight too. Both agreesive cricketers willing to take risks to buy a wicket and score a few.

Spinners, totally agree, but then again, do we really have a spinner ????

Cant see a white wash on the horizon for the Aussie XI for a while yet, Certainly not in 2 years time.

Rebuilding and identifying the next 5 year squad will be the priority.

Ponting will stay on , I imagine he will go on to the the world run scorer, passing Tendulkar in the next year or so. After that Clarke for Skipper

Statistically, other than Strauss and Broad,Australia were superior to England.I'm not counting Trott as he only played one game, although Trott in for Bopara made a big difference in this game.
But Australia made a couple of big scores and losing few wickets in matches they did not win.Great for the batting averages but meaningless in the context of the series.
Also I think England, overall, batted in depth better than Australia.....Broad,Swann even Anderson superior to Johnson,Siddle,Hauritz etc.
Man of the series....well,Clarke tops the Aussie averages and Strauss the English but neither was dominant throughout the series.Broad was Englands top bowler with 18 wickets and had a useful batting average of just under 30 but still some way to go before he reaches Bothams stature as an all rounder.
Thanks for the banter/analysis,especially wazza and Bob.....shame about the Chern Chim brekkie but maybe Jon will keep it warm in the oven for you until the next series in a couple of years !

Yes, England won the Ashes. Sadly don't feel 'over the moon' about it. The next one in Van Diemen's Land should be interesting. England have a lot to reflect on & some major changes to make.
Broad looks a good player & can swing the bat a bit - but a long way to go until he frightens the opposition when reading the teams - like Botham & Flintoff did. The rest of the bowlers have all had quite a long time to establish themselves, have not & are, frankly, a bit old in the tooth. Swann showed himself a capable enough spinner, in the mould of English spinners, (containing rather than winning) unless the pitch is very much in his favour. Batting line up not much better either. Strauss a competent captain, Cook flatters to deceive a little, Bopara showed he is not really competent against anyone who is a half decent bowler, Trott undoubtedly had a good game, Collingwood not really a batter who can bowl, nor a bowler who can bat. Would really be better off have a quality batsman in that position. WIkki conducted himself with few mistakes & a decent bat, one of the few real successes in my opinion. Pedersen undoubtedly will continue to play for himself rather than the team.
So Aussies will undoubtedly have a few 20 year olds champing to get in the team, England will have another mid career South African and maybe an 'old timer' wanting to make a return to the game :D
Any odds on Ramp & Trescothick actually making it onto the pitch in 2 years time?? :D

Sorry for the geography lesson Bob, but:

Map of Van Diemen's Land (now known as Tasmania)

Map of Australia, including Van Diemen's Land :D

About the cricket - from the moment they announced the team for the 5th, it was obvious (to me at least) that we were in trouble without having a spinner.

A sackable offence for the selectors, as far as I am concerned.

Now then , a further lesson for Bob he he he.

Hobart actually has tests played there. Belrieve Oval,

BUT Van Diemans land is definetely the preferred place to overnight when staying in Oz. Most Poms on tour get down to Tassie a few times whilst backpacking around.

hence the phrase, show us your " Map of Tassie " etc....

When Im back in Tassie in Feb, I will meet up with EX mate Boonie, and ask the question ! why no spinner, he is a selector and so is Jammie Cox, both Tasmanians !

I lost my bet to Jon and in true fashion, i will honour the bet, To wear a shirt saying "I want to be English " on a night out of the piss ! Dec 5th sounds like a good night for a pub crawl ! LOL

A very parochial view of the two headed state from wazza - as one would expect :D

His backgrounder on the request "show us your map of Tasmania" is completely incorrect.

It is a request made exclusively of women, and a quick reference to the map of Tasmania above will reveal the reason why

Jack

Prof Kevin Wilson and Sir Les Paterson, have made many references to the "Mappa " in their various cultural and educational sessions throught the last 25 years or so.

Even Ian Chappel used it as a chat up line years ago on tour 1972 !

Said it saved money on dinner and wine, if you knew you were going to tour Tassie that night.

Ah well I nearly managed to get you Aussie's united again... :D
I have just seen the Ashes tour down under details....no Test in Hobart, bad show I think :D We even gave the Welsh a chance to see proper cricket this year... :D
I must admit to Tasmania being one of the few places I would love to visit & hopefully will do one day, given a fair wind & the cash... :D
At least the tour will be played at a sensible hour if Thailand still holds my interest!!!

They wont play an Ashes test in Hobart, sell out crowds on the mainland will bring in bigger money.

Hobart from the Eastern Shore, home of Belrieve Oval

Think they stopped the free tickets back in the early 1800's for your guys, but then again we opened up the 10 Pound Pom Scheme in the 50's again.

Then the 80's onwards, we gave em a city , so they can all get together , Perth , the aboriginal name for whingers LOL

Jon from Scunny could not have fallen for that even though too much mushy peas on the brain can cause problems.

All that effort just for a small brown egg cup.....you would think they would have a nice big shiny cup with big handles on it, seems a bit tight,... and they do look a bit like silly sausages being photographed holding such a small prize.
