It's just been upgraded to 8.9, said to be offshore and involving a 10m Tsunami affecting coastal areas and extending 1.5kms inland in the Sendai area and Miyagi prefecture! BBC sources are quoting 4m and 6m Tsunamis in various locations. TV currently showing film of Sendai airport inundated with Tsumani floodwater.

The live coverage from a helicopter above Sendai is amazing - if that is the right word.

Just managed to reach my best friend of over 30 years and his family who live on the eastern side, but far inland. All are ok, but man that was stressful!

I'm still fielding calls asking if my family is ok. I appreciate the concern, but Americans and geography...

The ONE time I don't book a flight to LOS from east to west and THIS happens. Am I lucky or what? Woot!

japan is in a state of emergency, the cooling towers at the nuclear plant are failing, hundreds dead and hundreds missing.a train has dissapeared as has a boat carrying around a hundred people,we currently have a japanese student stsying with us and he said its not the earthquake that was dangerous but the tsunami which is killing everyone, because the buildings are built to withstand the earthquakes.
what is happening to the world these earthquakes and tsunamis seem to be getting bigger and more frequent. :(

I am anxious about where the next one will hit. A shift like this in one tectonic plate means another shift in another plate cannot be too far behind. I'm guessing California or China. If it is mainland China...oi!

The potentailly leaking reactors is what im really concerned about,

US have already shipped over tonnes of coolant as they have lost it and didnt havent enough redundancy etc

There is now talk of a controlled release of one of the damaged reactors !

The worlds 2nd biggest economy has just taken a massive hit, the aftershocks and financial tsunamai on the NYSX and world markets wont really be felt till after the weekend when a more detailed damage assessment will be identified.

My friend who lives in Japan has described how her house was shaken and everything broken inside / smashed etc, I imagine she might be now trying to fly home to Udon and stay with her family while this disaster slowly retreats and the recovery begins.

RIP to those who have lost their lives and those still missing

someone asked where the next one would be..Tonga 6.9

I dont suppose there are many Japanese on line here, but us here In NZ having suffered our own earthquake just weeks ago, our hearts go out the Japanese..Japan sent a Search and Rescue team to Christchurch to help us recover bodies of our fallen, which was much appreicated, and even though we are still in recovery, both the Japanese and NZ Urban Rescue crews are now on their way to Japan..

we just hope it is not our turn again for another shake..it was panic mode tsunami here last night, and even though we are trillions of miles away, we had unusual tide surges as the ripple effect was felt...no news of Philiipines, or Taiwan???

From reading many articles, the Pacific rim has seen that tsunami as far away as the US , Indonesia said it didnt afffect them.

Maaka, the teams from Christchurch will also be the same guys from oz as well as 74 left Sydney today on a Military aircraft.

Sadly the 3 teams will be repeating their skills again.
