I think you've done a Stirling job Alan despite what people are saying. If this house was built for my taste the only change i would make is the first floor front elevation balcony fence.I would change that to a balustrade design. And come to think of it maybe the ground floor section at the side of the front entrance too.

Certianly bette then my attempt to get one built four years ago. Had to walk way nothing like we had agreed a upon. It's still in litigation. If I ever get brave enough to try it again you can be sure I will be trying to find him. A lot smaller home like my budget

May I ask why you didn't use Q-Con blocks?

please be aware vegimite, that the contractor (ie alan the builder) gets a set of drawings and specification which he must price and build strictly to the said drawings and specification. The contractor (ATB) is not the designer, architect, structural engineer or client - he follows the plans and specification according to what he is given - and from what i can see a bl00dy good job he makes of it too, imo. \:D/

I know. I was a structural engineering technician in a previous life.

What I don't understand is why anyone would still specify those red bricks.

red bricks are approximately half the price per square metre to superblocks or k blocks . on the house that alans just built , you are talking a sustantial amount of money !!!! however if you intend to live in the house yourself , and like your creature comforts , air con ect . over a period of time the increased build costs will be repaid with lower fuel bills . ive lived in both types of houses and there truly is a vast differance in the internal temperatures of both materials , as much if not more so than having roof insulation . a lot of thais do not like using the blocks because they think they are not strong enough , however if the job is done properly , and a reinforced concrete beam is installed verticaly between the concrete pillars usualy at the bottom of the window line , strenght is not an issue , as the blocks are just an infill and not structual . i would however reccomend that wet areas (bathrooms) are built with bricks for obvious reasons . if the bathrooms suffer from direct sunlight , you can reduce the effects by cladding the external walls , this will give you insulation similar to using the superblocks .

in a word no, ive used the paint as well on our new place , every little helps . but the manufacturers state that it will reflect the heat by 5% , im not certain , but as its only slightly more expensive than a good quality normal paint , i used it . the problem is git , the red clay bricks not only soak up the sun all day , but they retain the heat for pretty much all the night , because of thier density , bit like fire bricks in an oven !!!! in my mind there is no substitute to using superblocks , they probably keep 50 % out and dont retain any heat for long . hope this helps .

definitely agree with saint, used cinder blocks on old house, before additional upgrade and shading, and those retained the heat for some time. inside the house after a local shopping / dining spree, would be at least 5 degree C more than outside temp. buddy had house k-block, both sitting basically in sun all day, he had a cinder and k block wall, built before all supplies available for k block and builder didnt' have a clue, so his house was double walled, and windows and doors open, very cool during the day. even after ours was upgraded, doubled the wall and shaded at exposure points, his was noticably cooler. ours was much improved from oven experience before upgrades, quite comfy and when hot, cooled quickly with ac.

no, my neighbor did, started off with k block, but builder didn't have materials or a clue, and they weren't available at the time, both  , or the proper cement/glue and reinforcement rods. sad, but too funny, so he put a cinder block wall around to enforce/support the k block. mine was just the thin cinder blocks and not much of an overhang roof, then i extended all the roof overhangs that needed it, and double walled the new sections i added to original design, amazing difference.

I have jungle of tress on the sun side that helps as well. But this thing really holds the heat no doubt about it. That is why I was thinking of the paint. I think it would pretty expensive proposition to add the k block now. I had thought about sheet rock inside with insulation between it and the brick, but I have no idea if it woudlldhelp our not. Hey I'm broke right now so wishful thinking, Of course dreaming doesn't cost much
