A question of proof (Alcohol content of Thai whiskey)

Postby mortiboy » April 23, 2009, 7:02 pm

Here is a question about proof % in spirit.Being a "regular whisky drinker" \:D/ I have noticed I am able drink "vasts" amount of Thai whisky, and I am as sober as judge!
If , on the odd occassion,I lucky enough to splash out on a scotch whisky:..... J Walker ect.I two thirds pssed on third of a bottle?
Both say 35% proof! my question is, Does Thailand have a different standard of measurement Than europe?
There is definitly a great difference between the two......hic

"Both say 35% proof!"

Alcohol content is expressed in % and prof is usually 2X the alcohol content. Scotch is generally 43% alcohol by volume and expressed as 86 prof and thus the expression "86 him" if one appears to be intoxicated. Or so I'm told;o)

Not had much experience with Thai whiskey, though I have seen the effect it makes on Thai's.
Don't know if this is true, but apparently we have a difference in one particular gene due to the fact that european early medicine was alcohol based, and that's how our gene developed. Maybe it would explain are tolerance to alcohol as opposed to herbal based medicine.

I just looked at a bottle of Thai whatever, and it says 35 but instead of a % sign it just has the little sign we use to express degrees. If it is actually 35 prof then it will only contain 17.5% alcy, about the same as wine.

well I know alcohol makes me act like a real A/H so I don't use it as for tolerance to alcohol
I suspect that has a lot to do with weight and consumption over the years as well as diet and food intake
so I suspect Thai's being of small frame can not drink has much as europeans & americans

Well really no experience with thai whiskey, but will give my 2 baht anyways.

Regency seems to be the poor mans Remy Martin (sp?) I drink it straight, a nice after dinner drink with say coffee, gives a good buzz. Most thai's mix it with soda.

Blend 365 - tried some on ice, not bad. The party I was at had boxes and boxes of the stuff. Seems to come in 12 packs like Leo. Thai's seem to add soda to everything and anything.

Well except -> Don't know its name, seems to come in a bottle and the label looks like the symbol for poison. Tasted a few shots, tastes like U.S. Southern MoonShine, or what we called "Grain Alcohol" in CN. Use to buy it to mix into fruit punch for really big parties during the 70's. Did the mixing a few times, so tasted it, but would never drink it, too many other good drugs around, without the headache. :D

A brief explanation. originally alcoholic content was determined by mixing with gunpowder and being lit . If it did it was considered to be 100% proof, which is 50% alcohol. Interesting to note the term"firewater ' probably came from this.
So today's whiskies are normally shown as 40% alcoholic content which is 80% proof . Alternatively increasingly in the international market where it is sold in 1 ltr bottles , it is labelled 40%volume, which means alcoholic content per litre volume, or 80%proof .
I think where the problem comes in when drinking Thai brands compared to Scotch is not the actual alcohol content but the source . Take Mekhong for example. It is not really a whiskey but a hybrid , being blended with both molasses and rice wine . To add to the problem glycerin is added to increase the alcoholic content . This latter product is known to cause blindness and therefore its sale is banned in several countries . I think this is the source of the OP's problem .I'll stick to the Glenmorangie thanks .
