A Tale of 2 mayors

Postby BobHelm » October 22, 2010, 12:09 pm

First, Tower Hamlets in London.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-11576725
This is a story of local government politics, especially party politics, at its worst.
The 'official' Labour Party candidate has now been changed a few times. Tales of vote rigging & dirty tactics abound & the locally selected candidate has been replaced by Labour Central Office. Now there is an official & an unofficial Labour Party candidate & the most famous Labour Mayor of all time (Ken Livingston) has come out in support of the unofficial candidate. This is something that should get him thrown out of the Party according to their rules, but Ken has been there before a few times.
In the light of the Labour chaos, one of the other candidates should be clapping their hands. However it seems not & maybe a reminder that 'any publicity is good publicity' yet again. The other candidates, it seems, have been completely driven from voters thoughts by the wrangle.
Does it matter?? Well no probably not in the scheme of things, except the winner of the position will be on the receiving end of a very nice 75,000 GBP a year salary for not doing very much.. Now if anyone in the Government needs any money saving tips that won't hurt anyone - just give me a call... :D

Second, Moscow.

No need to worry about vote fixing, dirty tactics or anything else to win this position. The rules are simple. Do what Prime Minister Putin wants & you have the job. Don't do what he wants & quickly exit, stage right.
Undoubtedly Democracy at its best & swiftest. No need for all that needless bickering over policy , vote grabbing & baby kissing. Just appoint the best man for the job as recommended by the boss. Simple.. :D

Even with all the things I complain about in America, one of the things I will always be grateful for,is that I was not raised in Russia!

Never could understand the political system.

Have I got it right?

You swamp the TV/Radio/Internet etc etc with propaganda for your candidate and as much anti propaganda as you can muster about your opposition. Meanwhile, your opponent is doing the same. Joe Public couldn't give a "rats ar*e" about any of it, as all he/she is concerned about is Coronation Street being delayed or cancelled.
Eventually you have an election, where all the people who managed to avoid watching any of the propaganda (and know or care very little about anything to do with politics) cast their vote for whoever happens to take their fancy....... ("he was at the top of the voting paper so he must be the best", "he has a nice smile on his election poster", "she was the only woman","I couldn't vote for him, he's got shifty eyes" etc;)

mmmmmmmm perhaps the Russian way, as Bob suggested ........Just appoint the best man for the job as recommended by the boss, isn't such a bad idea, after all it's the way virtually every job outside of politics gets filled.
I don't think you will find too many bosses willing to stand on the street and ask passers by to select his next chief accountant.

Excellent observation Statto & one, I admit, I had not thought of before.
Although I have often thought that a benign dictatorship might be a far better way of running a country. The only problem is that history shows that 'benign' & 'dictator' are not words that are often put together... :D
