Accomodations

Postby rob3996 » April 10, 2007, 6:59 am

Greetings All, I bought my plane ticket today and will be in Udon from May 13 thru May 24th. Based on things ive read on the site - I have reached out to Irish Clock and City Lodge to see who has vacancies.

I am looking at Udon as a possible retirement destination for me in 2012. Im a 22 year military vet (USMC, USCG), been to Thailand before but never Udon. Would definintly be interested in meeting up with some folks on the board, to gather some advice and insight.

Done alot of research by reading the posts and scanning the internet. Feel its time to get on a plane and check it out for myself.

Rito in fact has given me some great information. I reached out to him a couple weeks ago and he was kind enough to provide me with some good insight.

Seems as though the foreigners living in Udon are quite different than the Pattaya folks. Just an observation. Visited Pattaya last year and wished after about 5 days I would have done more research and visited another part of Thailand. Take Care. Robert R.

Hey Laphanphon - Just noticed your from Philly. I grew up in South Jersey about 10 minutes away. Wow - Udon must be quite different from Philly. How often do you make it back? Do you watch the Phillies there in Udon - you can watch via MLB.COM for $120 a year. Take care. Robert R.

You are sooo right about that Robert  Unfortunatly, Pattaya is where a lot of guys head to on their first trip and it has as much in common with Thailand as Toledo has with Disneyland.

Greetings fellow board members. Looks like it will be the Irish Clock, Steve responded back first and advd me that he had vacancies. So I should be booked from May 13 thru May 24th. Look forward to meeting some of the folks that frequent the forum. Curious if there is anything besides the normal items that I should bring with me. I know it is quite warm this time of year so swimming trunks would probably be a good idea. Take care. Robert R.

Thanks Rto - for the link. Didnt think I would need anything extravagant. One thing I would like to ask of the forum members is to send me the top three things in their honest opinion that a new guy should see or do if in Udon for 12 days.

Examples:
1. Place to sightsee/visit
2. Restaurant to eat in
3. Day trip to make
4. Best place to swim
5. Best place to run into board members
6. Best nightclub or entertainment venue
7. Best place to shop - Imagine this would be the Shopping complex?

I figure the replies will give me a pretty good start and keep me busy while in Udon. Thanks in advance. Rob R.

Rob, do you come alone or have you a wife. If you have a wife is she American or Thai. If you have no wife thats cool too,you will have a girl friend soon after ariving wether you want one or not. Recomend you travel very light as everything is cheap in Udon. you will likely go home with your bags bulging. Welcome to the Forum and have a safe trip. :D

Aardvark - its just me. No wife or GF. As for a GF - I know there are probably many girls there in Udon, but I will need to exercise some self-discipline. I dont want to wrap myself around the axle after 12 days and then have to leave. And I dont want to open the doors to an internet relationship while im in the states. I think the focal point for me is to evaluate Udon as a good retirement location for me in 2012. If so I can take leave every 8-9 months for a couple weeks until I retire. Now having said that - I wouldnt mind meeting a girl that could show me some of the sights, I just have to be upfront and not cast off the wrong impressions. Am I making sense or am I rambling? Take Care. Rob R.

You make a lot of sense to me Rob!!But be careful, that girl that ''just'' shows you around can become a GFE and your right about long distance relationships, they are for the most a pitfall!

only a good weather sports fan, start to pay attention if they make post season, although went to quite a few games a couple years, when they make the series back when. went to the game where williams had 3 up, 3 down to win, then to world series. had tickets for 6th game, figured if they didn't win that game, they aren't a pressure team and would lose, which they did in 7th game with perfect pitch, by same pitcher to joe morgan, i think. sold tickets to 6th game for very nice profit, which was good, because it rain delayed and extra innings. not much on cable here, so you will need MLB.COM. not a sports fan as you can see.

don't make it back to states and have no desire to :D got a brother in vineland, i used to live in hightstown, near princeton when i worked at newark airport. could see the turnpike from the apartment, exit 8, very convenient when not flying to work from princeton. lived in memphis last 5 yrs before coming here in 2000. maybe get together when you get here.

as Stan says, you are making sense, long distance relationships have to many negatives to work. have fun, hopefully catch you at night market when you get here for a couple. :D
