adsl in udon

my dad lives in thailand in udonthani and needs adsl connection. He is very novice with computers and needs a cheep connection to skype with us in australia. He is a bit out of the town of udon so wifi may be out but not sure. Can anyone suggest a cost effective option for him

I am "a bit out of town" and have 3BB cabled broadband. I know of others who are also "a bit out of town" but can only use CAT CDMA. It really depends on where your dad lives. If we knew that, other members of the forum might be able to give advice specific to your dad's area.

We're 'a bit' out of town, about 30km, have a decent enough ADSL service with TOT. 6Mb for 590 bht pm, yes I've had my problems with them but of late it's been pretty good. Bearing in mind I have about a km of overhead copper that gets hammered this time of year.

Most every village has an internet cafe and you should be able to skype from there. Costs about 10-15baht per hour.

If he has a smartphone (or you are willing to provide one for him), it might be possible to forgoe ADSL altogether if audio only (over GPRS) is acceptable. Video could be jerky until faster speeds arrive. 3BB has a THB 99 per month unlimited wi-fi plan which has coverage in most common places all over Udon proper. Skype video fairly decent. Perhaps maybe where he lives or nearby. Need location. Most knowledgeable board members would have no problem meeting up with him to explain how to use his phone to call over GPRS or Wi-Fi pro bono.
