Maybe so. I suppose the best advice would be to take a riders safety course in a western country, but that still won't prepare you for the challenges you'll come up against in Thailand. :|

I reckon you guys are over complicating the scenario of driving a scooter here (ie I am not talking about a big bike).

The best advice for any farang coming to Thailand is to bring, and apply, big dollops of common sense - both for bike riding, and life in general.

Happy New Year. :drunk:

Advice to those considering motorcycles

I was riding my harley in Hua Hin today along a back road doing about 50 kph when a young Thai guy and his lady passed on my right doing about 80 kph. on a scooter. I caught up to them a few minutes later, a bunch of people standing on the road and cars stopped, he lay dead in the middle of the road and his young gf was dead on the shoulder. No helmets and no commonsense. Take your time, wear a good helmet and expect anything to happen and never ride even with one drink in you. I won't even ride if I am just feeling too tired. If you are not an experienced rider and you are determined to give it a go have someone who is experienced spend time with you and learn the ropes. Have a safe and Happy New Year.
