I would never discuss my feelings or thoughts about the political situation with Thais directly>but ,if the time comes that I felt I couldn't discuss it with other expats,or post it on a forum,I would be planning an exit strategy!

Of course ,I am aware that there are dangers ,if a real civil war was to develop, scapegoats are needed to aleviate responsibilty and create diversion,falangs are perfect candidates,especially if there are a few that choose sides and take actions that support that side!

I am not of the mind that the political power players in this country,are overly concerned about the expat falang economic contributions to this country,which keeps me alert to the negative possibilities for us,if stability does not return reasonably soon!The reporting of the GNP growth in its teens during the month of April,if anywhere near being truthful,tells me that the loss of tourism revenue was only mildly hurtful and in isolated cases,while the rich and powerful continued to get more.

High end tourism ,and large foreign investments in manufacturing and construction might be recognized as a preferential policy sooner than many of us would like!

For me,I will continue to live here as long as the factors I personally need to enjoy life exist.one being a forum or group that allows me to express my feelings and thoughts.Living in fear and secrecy is not an acceptable form of living for me,other than as a short term necessity for immediate survival of family,self and friends! :D

Luckily I feel that most Thais will not follow the tried and tested route of extremism, as in the South where it is raising its head again.
I do agree with previous comments , our best option is to try to avoid being involved, easier said than done on occasions but in the main we should defer to the authorites actions no matter how we view them, and not speak out publically against the staus quo.
Thailand is more dangerous now than when the drug wars were occuring and over 2000 died during that, but I do think that as foreigners we are reasonably safe.
The fact that one of their major earners has been hit hard ( tourism) then reading today the actions they are proposing, they are aware that foreign visitors and even those who live here are needed, so although I take little comfort from those comments is is heartening to hear it.
We ( those of us who live here some for a long time, others not so long) have an option, we all have to stay or leave, many have left due to financial worries, others quoting the current situation as unacceptable. I do feel though that we can offer solace to Thais, if we feel it is reasonably safe to stay ,and we in our small way continue to invest our time and money in this country to many it is seen as though Thailand is not so bad. To be truthful it is not bad, the country and the people although well intentioned are in fact in the main il-informed and by their very culture led down the garden path . We all accept that Thailand has to change not only its political system but other parts of it life , not least its educational establishment.
These I am sure will change, whether it will occur in my lifetime I am not certain, but change it will have to to survive as a viable nation in this increasingly competitive world.
Lastly i leave you with this comment, Thailand and its people are in the main good, albeit very good at scamming and personally cheating everyone, but underlying it they are a people who I like, in a country which is pleasnt to live in with all its shortfalls and pitfalls. So although currently it is in a state of flux, it is not that bad is it really !!

"Thailand and it's people are in the main good,albeit very good at scamming and personally cheating everyone________"
So you deem your wife/partner and her family as scammers and cheaters?. Maybe so but don't paint all Thais with the same brush.This comment is extremely insulting to the majority of ThAIS and to most of us farlangs who treat our fellow Thais with the utmost respect.

Finally Thai politics should NOT be discussed on this open forum as YOU are endangering the lives of farlangs living here.

Tilo has hit the nail on the head. Abhisit has no say in the matter at all; you and I both know who does.

This comment is nonsensical; it is symptiomatic of the ostrich syndrome that seems to infect many members on this board

It's really funny, with all that goes on and telling immigration that I still live in the same place I did for five years every three months. Certain subjects are not to be discussed by foreigners or Thai's, In the end I have more freedom now, then I ever had before. That is important to me.

As for the scamming part most Thai's know us about as well as we know them. Me if you want to be silly and pay me twice as much as others pay. Hey I would be glad to help you with that. The assumption is we are rich and don't care about money. It's impression left by tourist not expats.

If I get scammed it will only happen once. On the other hand I never ask Thai to do something for me without paying them, their time and knowledge has a value as well.

Family and money I sit the rules and stick to them.

Maybe it's just me just, I don't feel fearful with what I have seen thus far. I guess I'm really home I no longer feel a need to defend Thai's or foreigners.

I hope things will settle down for a bit, I really don't see the next election solving much. In the end someone is going to be unhappy.

Thailand will find it's own way.

So Tomboy ALL the Thais you know wold not cheat or even scam from you or anyone else would they.
Corrup[tion is rife here, call it what you will, scam, cheat,corrupton etc:- it is a fact of life , so I am not insulting Thais just telling the truth, they know it but will never admit it. I have many friends who are Thais who do happen to agree with me, BUT and it is a big but feel unable to do anything about it.
I do not nor will I discuss pros and cons of either side in any political confrontation.
As for an ostrich syndrome, it is not that, but with the laws here with lese majeste and the seemingly apparant ease that if you post anything deemed against the Governemnt or even the Royal family you get called upon fairly quickly. so saying nothing is the best option I feel.

We are guests here and should respect their laws even if we disagree with them. Thais seem to spend a lot of time finding how to circumnavigate any laws that does not suit them, we do not have that ;luxury we obey all laws. otherwise we could be expelled.
In fact i agree with many, at the moment we have nothing to fear, but should the situation change for the worse that staement would have to be revisited and re-evaluated in the light of the situation presenting itself as possibly anti foreigner for any reason.

Strange that Abhisit has told everyone that everything is fine now including all the foreign diplomats he met with recently but still wants to retain this state of emergency. I really don't believe the trouble is over yet and if there are no elections in the fall and I don't believe there will be I am sure there will be trouble. I hope I am wrong.

Good news for a change:

June 3, 2010

The Department of State has canceled the May 27, 2010 Travel Warning for
Thailand due to improvements in safety and security conditions
throughout the country. The Thai government ended the nightly curfew
May 29, 2010.

This message reminds U.S. citizens that a State of Emergency remains in
effect in the following provinces:
* Bangkok metropolitan area
* Chaiyaphum
* Chiang Mai
* Chiang Rai
* Chon Buri
* Khon Kaen
* Lampang
* Nakhon Ratchasima
* Nakhon Sawan
* Nan
* Nonthaburi
* Pathum Thani
* Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya
* Samut Prakan
* Si Sa Ket
* Udon Thani

A State of Emergency gives the police and military increased powers to
maintain public order. Specifically, security forces have the authority
to:
* prohibit gatherings of more than five people;
* prohibit distribution of media or publications deemed to affect
security or public order;
* prohibit or limit the use of vehicles or particular routes; and
* evacuate buildings or areas or prohibit entry into them.

You might encounter security forces personnel at roadblocks or other
security checkpoints. If you do, you should obey all instructions from
them. Be sure to carry identification and proof of your U.S. citizenship
at all times to present if asked by authorities.

There were numerous incidents of explosive attacks, including several
isolated grenade and arson attacks, in and around Bangkok and Chiang Mai
over the past two months. Additional explosive devices were discovered
before detonation. Some of these incidents occurred at or near areas
frequented by U.S. citizens. These incidents appear to be motivated by
domestic politics and do not appear to be acts of international
terrorism. The possibility of more such attacks cannot be ruled out.
You should exercise caution and vigilance at all times. Immediately
report to law enforcement or security personnel any unattended packages
or bags or suspicious objects in public areas.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and
possibly escalate into violence with little or no warning. You should
avoid areas that may be targeted for demonstrations and exercise caution
if within the vicinity of any demonstrations or large gatherings. You
should monitor local media to keep updated with the latest information
of any demonstrations and areas to avoid.
