Actually that is not quite true, I did a news broadcast in which it showed that HIV infections generally were up to over 1 million after the Thai goiovt stopped funding a scheme which promoted safe sex.
This included schools, temples and all sorts of organisations warned told and generally gave advice including the issue of free condoms.
The rise in HIV amongst gay's is not surprising as many of them did not heed the previous advice and also the movement of other nationalites into Phuket has brought a whole new range of problems not least the rise in infections.
Thailand DID lower its infection rates quite considerably but now with costs generally on the rise, health care is not too high on many Thai shopping lists, so gentlemen take care and be careful.
I have heard of many who boast they do not use any precautions, well its their body I suppose but what about the next man ?
Many ladies ( I use the term loosely here) have infections they may not realise like Gonorrhoea, Clamidia or other minor STD's whcih does not affect them in the early stages but lies quite innocently inside them, transmission is swift and in Thailand the Big 'G's quite strog and injections are needed to rid oneself of the infection.
How do I know this, well I have contacts and in establishing the HIV infection rates, this also came up.
The advice I was given was multi partner sexual enjoyment would lead to a 50% chance of an STD transmission of some sort.
HIV is still rare but the ladies that travel across Thai borders, may not be as pure as one thinks.
Enough said that is not insulting any race or nationality just a warning to us all.
take care.
