Alternatives to UBC True or whatever it's called

Postby tamada » December 3, 2010, 11:54 pm

I have had UBC's dish service for ages and there's not much that I watch. I have seen other dishes around, PSI is one and there's a yellow one, same size as UBC's but I missed the name.

Anyone here subscribe to the alternatives and can give examples of what they have that's better or more varied than UBC?

My neighbour mentioned he is getting an 'all in' service through ToT installed. Any ideas what that's all about? He is away at work so can't ask him what it's like.

Oh yes... cost?

Thanks,
tam

According to Wiki..
Independent Satellite TV installers
PSI - large Thai franchise - [1]
9SAT - Expat owned company, based in Bangkok - [2]
Comsat Communications - "Satellite TV for Expats, by Expats" based in Chonburi, but serving whole Kingdom - [3]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_in_Thailand

9sat appears to be Jsat, so do not know if the Wiki entry is a typo..
http://www.jsat.tv/
http://www.comsat.co.th/index.php?id=68

But I have also seen the very large dishes & have no idea what they are linked to &, sorry, don't know where to look for information either.

This is an interesting site as it allows you to enter 'Udon Thani Thailand' & then get alignment details for all satellites available from there. I think that a lot more research would have to be done as to who operated the satellite, what television channels were available (& at what price), but I think the only other way is to maybe join a Forum just related to satellite TV.

Hi, Tam.
The large dishes, black, are PSI. I have one. They have a motor that turns the dish to the sat. you are watching the prog. from. You buy one, approx, 3,000B, and you don't pay a monthly rental. Mostly Thai, but sometimes have live sport, when they can get it. After 4 months I got a True dish, for the sport etc. I got the Gold package, approx 1,600B a month. Floats my boat. The bloke up the road from me had a yellow dish but took it out after a few weeks and got a True dish.

if you buy a black dish ( not only psi, dynasat better quality, same channels..) i can only advice to not go smaller than 6ft to be able good reception during most severe weather conditions, 3.000b will be a 5or 5.5 ft dish to small.......
price 6ft fix all included ( dish ,lnb, receiver, installation costs ) not exceeding 4.000 bath , when you are able to install all yourself you will safe 1.000- 1.500 bath
cheers.....

with all sat channels not worth the monthy subscirption in thailand i personally think there are no alternative just get the net and watch the relevent TV channel from behind your PC to keep costs to a min and for those into their football or errr soccer go and watch it in a pub etc cause to 2000 bt a month for UBC is a rip off

There is a service available called 'Dream Box'. It's channel lineup is exactly the same as True Vision Platinum with all the extras except HD. It uses a dish the same size as True, and a connection to your ADSL modem to decode the satellite signals.

The cost depends on the number of boxes, modem connections, and service term. Initial installation will run around 9,000 baht with a wireless connection and one box. Service is ~3,000 a year. I think there are several guys around town selling the service. Prices vary.

The ADSL connection needs a Downstream DNR of 10 or better for the service to function well.

I have one of these setups, get alot of freezing up times. How do I check whether or not I have a ''Downstream DNR of 10'' or not,and if not ,what do I have to do to get it?

Googling for ''Downstream DNR'' got me ''SNR'',Signal to Noise Ratio. Is that what you were referring to?

Yes, it's the signal to noise ratio (excuse my typo). I have the timeouts, too, more when my SNR is low. The SNR is a function of the service provider. When I complained to TOT because my SNR was often below 10, they advised me to unplug the phone when not using it. This has been a little benefit, but of course, now no one can call me on the land line. Oh, well.

To find your SNR enter your modem by typing 192.168.1.1 in the internet address field of your browser and hit enter. The standard username and password are admin, admin or perhaps something else depending upon the modem you are using. Somewhere in your modem should be something that tells you your status and then your ADSL connection.

This will give you your download and upload SNR. Line attenuation which is an indicator of how far you are from the hub that is serving you. There's a formula I found somewhere to do this. I was a bit over 3km from the hub. A long way. Consequently, a lower SNR. A line carries telephone calls, the ADSL traffic on the line, and the random leaks in the connections between you and the hub. Lots of data that your modem sorts out on the line. If the line is dirty the modem gets a weaker signal and we get timeouts and slower internet service as the modem tries to make sense of the signal.

Hope this helps.

hi malc,
i do not know this helps you, you can order online here or give them a call first , pay by atm and leave them send it by ems
as this humax is an outdated model , it was only one i could find,( same yours?) maybe an alternative if you can not find it in udon,
http://www.pnsat.com/index.php?cPath=35 ... e846db3f4e
i was thinking as you pay monthly rent for material ( receiver , around +200bath, or am i wrong?) ubc should be able to replace your remote...good service again... ,you can try on the same street digital , other side in front of the round circle (before bangkok bank) , they are selling many remotes also ( fixing tv etc....) or leave them fix in big c...
anyway good luck
