American food in Udon Thani.

I too like the Foodland (soi 5, off Sukumvit) counter eating. Good place for people watching also; but the mix have been changing not for the better.

Best to make your own. For vegetables/fruits any of the open markets or Tesco, CarreFour.

For meat: beef - Thai Beef (select your cut and watch it being cut) as good as anything I have gotten at a Keorger, FoodLion, or any of the other US supermarkets. For hamburger - need to grind your own. Sometimes Tesco or CarreFour has some small packages of ground beef, and if you are lucky its not 3 days old and looking like its already cooked.

chicken - Tesco pork - I guess Tesco, but have not found any that tasty, but then again not a pork fan.

There are a few Thai restaurants where one can get potatoes, vegetables, with either pork, fish, or chicken, or even a combo with all three, for a very reasonable price. Then of course you can get some sort of English mess of who knows what, for a steep price.

You should try Thai Beef, around 11AM to say 1PM on a Thursday, a man is usually working and cutting stuff up for other business's I think. He seems to know what would make me happy and you can always get any thickness at any time.

About 6 years ago, got a nice looking steak at Tops, but it was like eating my shoe and I bet it tasted the same. Big C is the other side of town for me, so only go when going to Makro.

Don't know if it is still there, but for pork there was a place across from the air base on the left with a pig in the sky which had better pork, bacon..... I have not gone in a long time, for a lot of times they had nothing and its out of the way for me.

Pork at the market just might be better, but turned off by the flies. Next time the wife goes, might have her try. For minced pork, get that from local shop, cooked, hot, with sticky rice, great with a few leo's.

Most the time I get my pork/chicken meat from the Tesabahn morning market. I go early and I have never encountered any flies on the meats, but I have driven past other open air markets later in the day and have witnessed fly infested meat products. I don't shop at Tesco and I've had bad luck with Big C, meat starts to smell after a day or two, even after I put in the refrigerator.

FISH

For fish, you can't get any fresher than live at the market and if you want it filleted, just ask, they do a fairly good job, like in the States, just check it and pull out the few bones.
Too hot to be running the oven, so don't do that this time of year. There is a night market the wife calls and then picks up the already cooked whole fish with all the stuff that comes with it. Seems to be about the same price as buying at the market uncooked.

When Carrefour first opened they had some nice Salmon Steaks and the price was right, now the price has doubled and so, they don't sell much. Buying fish is not my forte.

Ya, have also noticed that (starts to smell) from Tesco. So only buy for the day or next, never longer. And like I said, pork never seems to have a good taste. Why, maybe just me. OR Maybe thats why Thai's make it super HOT, when your mouth is burning up, you don't think about the taste.

Oh, I have found that when I have apple sauce with it, everything is fine. But apples are to expensive these days.

652 is a great value for food and drink. Excellent American and Thai food, free pool table, open air setting, on Nong Bua rd, easy to find by baht bus if not having transportation, actually walking distance from downtown area.

Some of my favorites, best burgers in town, pork chop steak, liver and onions (get good reviews, but not my thing), ribs, are my usual yank food order. Thai food, well, it's all good and all inexpensive. If you don't see it, she can probably do it, spiced up like it should, or any way you want.

James and Nok are pleasant host, and has a local feel to it, along with great non intrusive background music, just request any artist, and he's probably got it. pics on a couple sets on flickr below and facebook

Non beer bar/bar girl venue, if looking for drunks and prostitutes, look elsewhere.

Helen . You might be a little out of date. I met Nok working in a hairdressers in the town center last week and she said she is now separated from her ex husband and certainly isn't doing the cooking there anymore .Don't know if he might have got a new cook though .

Perm, perm? Oh Tex , you are so yesterday. Today's man wouldn't be seen with a perm. I go there for a hair wax and steam, and my natural colored platinum hair highlighted by the L'Oreal trained male stylist who has just started working there .As for the style . I prefer it scissored cut to a fairly short length both back and sides .I don't know how much hair you have left but if you want to try , its located next door but one to Fuzzy Kens, who I understand does a nice hamburger . He also knows a thing or two about hairstyles .
