Andrew Zimmern gives Udon Thani food a big thumbs down

It is easy to come from another country and slag off about a particular region's quality of cuisine. It is a shame Zimmern did not couch his comments by perhaps saying that the socio economic breakdown in the Udon Thani region suggests that the exotic type dishes mentioned by other posters whilst having great appeal to the palate, does not appeal to the pocket. The recent thread on where to for Christmas dinner demonstrates that expats vote with their pocket in relation to value for money as compared to paying over the odds for an exotic dining experience. Udon Thani has a magnetic attraction based on its people and the lifestyle that can be enjoyed there, Over time, idealist chefs will set up in Udon, offer the standard that the elite seek, only to find that the middle 80% of the people will not support such a venue on regular basis and therefore forced to slip quietly into oblivion.

Zimmerman could take a leaf out of Jamie Oliver's newest release 'Jamie's America" where he visited a large number of regions with the USA seeking out the different ethnic/socio economic groups. Rather than slag the food of each region, Jamie embraced the various cuisines giving viewers of his programme an insight into the sub cultures that exist and the food they eat.

Perhaps Udonmap might like to present a utube style video on its home page highlighting the variety of cuisines in the Udon area along with a thai chef/cook preparing a signature dish of the region for Udon would be visitors to see that Udon Thani is not in the backwater when it comes to dining, albeit the menu choices in most dining establishments are determined by the general disposable income available in region.
