Well, this is just a continuation on the theme of ladies in Thailand and how a few Thai ladies met me. Please understand all of the following has occurred at a time when I have been with someone and I have not gone out of my way to meet anyone. Nevertheless, we were in the Fairy department store in Khon Kaen when my friend's nephew was attracted by certain 'punk' style items. As they were appraising the articles, one of the shop sales ladies began asking me a number of questions about my nationality, was the lady with me my wife and was her nephew our son, and so on. When I informed the young lady (31 years old) that the lady and I were just good friends she gave me her phone number and asked me to call so we could have dinner. At this point my close friend joined the conversation and suggested that I get the phone number of the girl, which I already had. This created a bit of a shock but my friend soon recovered and told me to ask her out for dinner. But not that night.
My friend and her nephew returned to Udon that evening. I went out for a stroll about ten o'clock. A couple of young girls went by on their motorcycle and called out 'sawasdee khap'. They went about a hundred yards down the street and turned back, and stopped to talk to me (in Thai). They found out that I was over sixty and quickly went on their way. About thirty seconds later two more ladies drove by me and this time I replied, 'pai nai khap (where are you going)'. They stopped and chatted with me for 30 minutes or more. The driver was aged 23 and her friend was 19. They are vocational college students. The younger one was hungry so we went to eat and made a date to go out to dinner the next night. I did not expect them to show up but there they were with a 22-year old with them. So the four of us took off on the two motorcycles and ate a nice dinner.
But the evening did not end there. The girls wanted to drink. I do not drink but I went with them to a sort of beer tavern with a live Thai group that was quite good. There were about a hundred or so students drinking or dancing...just the place for someone my age.
The girls got bored and we left at midnight and ended up at a place called 'Te Wan Daeng (red day?)'. We were joined by another female student where the girls proceeded to get hammered on Johnny Walker Red Label. There was a really good Thai group and the place was raucous to say the least. There might have been 500 Thai students there drinking and dancing with the majority of them female.
At this point I realised that I was really out of place and thought about the best way to make an exit without offending anyone. But curiousity got the best of me and my attitude became, 'what the heck, how many times in my life will I have an opportunity to have an experience like this again'. The band stopped at two and perhaps a hundred students and myself moved to another room where the drinking and dancing, but not the live music, which continued until 6 in the morning. I was finished by about 3:30 when I convinced one of the less drunk girls to weave her motorcycle back to the hotel. It was, to say the least, a very interesting experience.
The next night I had a nice dinner with the lady from the Fairy department store. None of these ladies speak English beyond hello.
When I related the incident at the 'Wan Daeng' to my friend in Udon, she remarked that she used to go clubbing all of the time when she was a student in Chiang Mai. The difference, according to her, is that she does not drink whereas all of the woman I saw were drinking heavily.
I suppose this is all a matter of being at the right place at the right time because I was not searching for other friends. The next meeting was even more interesting. I was just leaving the hotel to have lunch when a gentleman said, 'farang lah (handsome farang). I said, 'no, the Thai gentleman is the handsome one'. He was part of a group of insurance people attending a meeting at the hotel. This was a well-dressed group and looked high middle-class. One of the ladies came to speak with me. She advised me not to speak my fractured Thai because she is fluent in English, and is an insurance agent. She is 38 and has two kids. After five minutes of talk, she said that she would come back to stay with me at the hotel. Amazing. Here is a young and attractive, well-educated and well-dressed lady willing to sleep with me after a few minutes of conversation.
Of course, this created a bit of a quandry for me. There is my innocent friend in Udon Thani who expects me to continue to be her ATM after over two years of training, but here was opportunity in the form of a very attractive lady knocking at my door. Naturally, I declined the invitation.
All of this was kind of fun for my friend in Udon at first, but after these last few encounters she is beginning to find it all a bit tiresome. Nevertheless, she did say I should have taken advantage of winning the jackpot with (as she calls them) 'fairy', 'student' and 'insurance'.
As I was about to leave wild Khon Kaen for tamer Udon Thani (the students say that 'Night and Day' is too dull), the 23-year old called and suggested we eat lunch at the Fairy Plaza. Fortunately, the bus was leaving at that time and I made it to relative safety of Udon and was able to act as a reliable ATM for my friend when we went to dinner and shopping at Tesco-Lotus this evening (I should say that she did the shopping whereas I provided the funds).
Life seems odd at times, but it sure can be interesting.
