Another Time...another place

Postby Laan Yaa Mo » September 1, 2008, 10:38 pm

Well, this is just a continuation on the theme of ladies in Thailand and how a few Thai ladies met me. Please understand all of the following has occurred at a time when I have been with someone and I have not gone out of my way to meet anyone. Nevertheless, we were in the Fairy department store in Khon Kaen when my friend's nephew was attracted by certain 'punk' style items. As they were appraising the articles, one of the shop sales ladies began asking me a number of questions about my nationality, was the lady with me my wife and was her nephew our son, and so on. When I informed the young lady (31 years old) that the lady and I were just good friends she gave me her phone number and asked me to call so we could have dinner. At this point my close friend joined the conversation and suggested that I get the phone number of the girl, which I already had. This created a bit of a shock but my friend soon recovered and told me to ask her out for dinner. But not that night.

My friend and her nephew returned to Udon that evening. I went out for a stroll about ten o'clock. A couple of young girls went by on their motorcycle and called out 'sawasdee khap'. They went about a hundred yards down the street and turned back, and stopped to talk to me (in Thai). They found out that I was over sixty and quickly went on their way. About thirty seconds later two more ladies drove by me and this time I replied, 'pai nai khap (where are you going)'. They stopped and chatted with me for 30 minutes or more. The driver was aged 23 and her friend was 19. They are vocational college students. The younger one was hungry so we went to eat and made a date to go out to dinner the next night. I did not expect them to show up but there they were with a 22-year old with them. So the four of us took off on the two motorcycles and ate a nice dinner.

But the evening did not end there. The girls wanted to drink. I do not drink but I went with them to a sort of beer tavern with a live Thai group that was quite good. There were about a hundred or so students drinking or dancing...just the place for someone my age.

The girls got bored and we left at midnight and ended up at a place called 'Te Wan Daeng (red day?)'. We were joined by another female student where the girls proceeded to get hammered on Johnny Walker Red Label. There was a really good Thai group and the place was raucous to say the least. There might have been 500 Thai students there drinking and dancing with the majority of them female.

At this point I realised that I was really out of place and thought about the best way to make an exit without offending anyone. But curiousity got the best of me and my attitude became, 'what the heck, how many times in my life will I have an opportunity to have an experience like this again'. The band stopped at two and perhaps a hundred students and myself moved to another room where the drinking and dancing, but not the live music, which continued until 6 in the morning. I was finished by about 3:30 when I convinced one of the less drunk girls to weave her motorcycle back to the hotel. It was, to say the least, a very interesting experience.

The next night I had a nice dinner with the lady from the Fairy department store. None of these ladies speak English beyond hello.

When I related the incident at the 'Wan Daeng' to my friend in Udon, she remarked that she used to go clubbing all of the time when she was a student in Chiang Mai. The difference, according to her, is that she does not drink whereas all of the woman I saw were drinking heavily.

I suppose this is all a matter of being at the right place at the right time because I was not searching for other friends. The next meeting was even more interesting. I was just leaving the hotel to have lunch when a gentleman said, 'farang lah (handsome farang). I said, 'no, the Thai gentleman is the handsome one'. He was part of a group of insurance people attending a meeting at the hotel. This was a well-dressed group and looked high middle-class. One of the ladies came to speak with me. She advised me not to speak my fractured Thai because she is fluent in English, and is an insurance agent. She is 38 and has two kids. After five minutes of talk, she said that she would come back to stay with me at the hotel. Amazing. Here is a young and attractive, well-educated and well-dressed lady willing to sleep with me after a few minutes of conversation.

Of course, this created a bit of a quandry for me. There is my innocent friend in Udon Thani who expects me to continue to be her ATM after over two years of training, but here was opportunity in the form of a very attractive lady knocking at my door. Naturally, I declined the invitation.

All of this was kind of fun for my friend in Udon at first, but after these last few encounters she is beginning to find it all a bit tiresome. Nevertheless, she did say I should have taken advantage of winning the jackpot with (as she calls them) 'fairy', 'student' and 'insurance'.

As I was about to leave wild Khon Kaen for tamer Udon Thani (the students say that 'Night and Day' is too dull), the 23-year old called and suggested we eat lunch at the Fairy Plaza. Fortunately, the bus was leaving at that time and I made it to relative safety of Udon and was able to act as a reliable ATM for my friend when we went to dinner and shopping at Tesco-Lotus this evening (I should say that she did the shopping whereas I provided the funds).

Life seems odd at times, but it sure can be interesting.

I'm sure he's gorgeous, BM.

Must be all that Rounders you play, Tilo!

Either that, or you possess other attributes.

Looking forward to more of those Tilo Thai history lectures. :D

It would be nice to say that I am handsome but, as my close and good friend is always ready to tell me, 'I am as ugly as sin'- at least that is the closest polite translation that I can provide. The actual Thai words are not those that are used in polite company as one finds on this forum. Rounders does nothing for me in attracting females as that pleasant sport is not very popular here. As a diabetic the other attributes falls into a category of ' sorry, there is nothing that can be done to solve your problem'. Furthermore, I do not look very kindly on the political group that favours 70% of parliament to consist of appointed members so no points are won there.

Tomorrow we are visiting Nong Khai so we will see if the magic continues or has run its course. I wish I had this kind of luck when I was younger. All three of these ladies 'fairy', 'student' and 'insurance' called me within moments of one another a few minutes ago. Whoa, this reminds me that we were in Watson's this afternoon and the saleslady asked my friend if we were phu baow and phu saow, and when my friend said no, the clerk asked me if she could be my phu saow. This was just joking though because the saleslady has a husband and two kids but it was fun to 'phut len' (joke).

It would be nice to get to the night market meeting before it comes time to return to Canada and meet some of you in person.

I'm flattered that you compare me to George Clooney, BM. Sadly, I'm more like a four feet nine version of Benny Hill with strong prescription spectacles.

Tilokarat, you're an utter gentleman!

I wish I had this kind of luck when I was younger.

I know exactly what you mean! As they say though, it happens when you least expect it.

But what about your 'friend'? Isn't she becoming a tad (Thai style) jealous by now?

you, try as you might to not embrace it. Awaiting more chapters of the memoirs. ;)

Don't apologise old chap, Rosemary Clooney is a fine woman and one who would undoubtedly ask Khun Tilo for a date.

Do you think this could be a pheromone thing, Tilo? :-k

Looking forward to the further adventures of our Canadian lecturer in the Land of Smiles! :D

Well Tony, I had hoped to see a bit of Thai style jealously but she safeguards that part of her personality very well. Mostly, she gives me ecouragement to find someone that will love me and take care of me properly even if the lady is young enough to be my granddaughter. For example, the next morning we were at a restaurant near one of the housing estates and two very nice ladies served us. My true and good friend quickly obtained the telephone number of the prettier one for me. The young lady is just 17, but there we were bantering back and forth in Thai and I learnt that this girl is trying to save money for study at a vocational school.

Later that day, we were in the Complex and spotted her elder sister, who is 57 and more in my age range, at Swenson's. The elder sister looks very good, and soon my friend was encouraging us to go to the amphoe muang the next morning. The thing is the elder sister was all for it. But, I went along for the ride anyway and mugged for the camera and exchanged many pleasantries with elder sister. This lady is a school teacher and will take early retirement and hopes to invest in a guesthouse, basically renovating her home near Robinson's. It is a good idea and she should make quite a bit of money because the location is great (Adulyadej Road). My friend was very excited about the prospect of me marrying her elder sister. Normally, she is calm and cool and never shows emotion of any kind.

Perhaps, this was taking a toll on my friend, however, because the next day she got upset with me over a minor incident and instead of going boating on the river near Loei she turned the truck around and we returned to Udon Thani. The minor incident might have been the fact that I was getting a stream of telephone calls from various acquaintances in Khon Kaen on the way towards Loei. Or it may be because I absolutely refuse to send her money on a monthly basis. Probably the latter weighs more heavily on her mind.

In fact, we are having a great time together even though she insists we can never be more than friends. My friend and her nephew have been terrific taking me to various places and eateries around the province and the city. I cannot thank her enough for the effort she has taken on my behalf. Well, actually, I can because despite my most valiant efforts, she is somehow able to keep the cash flow from the ATM going.

And there we were at a training college for Thai massage yesterday (600 baht for three people for two hours) when one of the trainees spoke to me privately and asked me to be her faan. Too bad these ladies are so young as this one was just 27. My friend approved and said she hoped I could find someone nice soon. She neglects to see that the someone nice is her.

This morning, the day of Samak's arrival in Udon, my friend offered to drive me and my acquaintance from the Fairy Department Store in Khon Kaen to Nong Khai for the day. This plan was scotched, however, because 'fairy' refused to ride the bus to Udon. She wanted my friend to drive to Khon Kaen to pick her up, drive back to Udon, go to Nong Khai, come back to Udon and then drive her back to Khon Kaen in the evening. This is too much and rather rude and demanding. As my friend said, if 'fairy' was someone very special, perhaps she would spend all that time driving back and forth between Udon-Khon Kaen and Nong Khai but felt that 'fairy' might not quite be a 'Tata Young' counterpart. Also, she doubted if 'fairy' had a mercedes benz at home, and thought it would not have been too humbling an experience for the lady from the Fairy department store to take the bus. My friend warned me that there would be lots of trouble ahead if I had a relationship with 'fairy'. These are words of wisdom.

We are meeting today at noon. Let's see what the gods have on offer for my last few days in Udon and Thailand.

Thanks for the comments Quinault11, they are appreciated.

As for my success in meeting ladies of all ages in Thailand on this trip, it was probably a matter of luck more than anything, but it was nice to have the ego massaged after 11 months of rejection by females in Toronto. Actually, I am only interested in my very good friend from Udon. Perhaps the attention given me will cause her to treat me well and be less focused on shopping, shopping, shopping and my position in her heart as a personal ATM. Joking (phut len na khap)

With the exception of about 30 minutes at the Night Market, I did not speak any English in Thailand. I prefer to try and get by in Thai. This is not to say that I am fluent in Thai, but I can speak and understand the Thai language fairly well. There are still a number of political terms such as elections, political parties, and government departments that have eluded my Thai vocabulary. My written Thai is very good because I remember most of the grammatical rules and can put Thai2English.com to good use. My reading and understanding of Thai sentences is sporadic mainly because there is a problem in putting the Thai letters together in a coherent way.

I have lived in Thailand for over three years most of which took place in the mid-eighties at a farming village about 12 miles outside Chiang Mai on the Doi Saket Road between Bo Sang and Doi Saket.

I have made three visits to Udon Thani and find it my favourite destination in Thailand. Chiang Mai has changed out of all recognition for me, but I still like Nan and Lamphun too.

phom ai geh loei (I am very old). My return to Toronto took place on my 62nd journey around the Sun. Nevertheless, my life is fairly active from playing baseball and football (Canadian version) and hiking in the hills and mountains of Isaan and northern Thailand.

This Saturday I will be attending classes in beginning Thai mostly to upgrade my tones, and to fill in some of the vacancies in my Thai vocabulary. The cost is $240 Canadian about 7750 baht or so. Also, I would like to learn more Lao/Isaan.

makmakmak if your question about smoking is directed towards me, I am sorry to say that I have never smoked anything in my life...don't drink either.
