You're right on the assignment.. I ended up doing 21 1/2 years in the Army and Swing shift in the box for 26 months was by far the best (and easiest) job I ever had in my career.. Add to that the exotic life of living in Thailand and t'was heaven for a young man..
Interesting to me that I did almost exactly that length of time in the Army. Retired as an E8 74Z. See where there was a 74F at the box. Didn't know any of those guys were there. Course I wasn't really paying attention either. I heard at one time that the total number of guys who married Thais was far more than the Army ever wanted to admit. Uh, BTW, 'twas heaven indeed.

let's see.. Just off the top of my head, other guys stayed 20 too.. A far cry from the DILLIGAF, FTA youngsters we were while at the 7th:
Joe McClane, O5H at 7th, ret. E-8
John Soper, O5H at 7th ret at least E-8 stayed MI.
Al Vieherstahler, 98C at 7th ret. E-8
Ken Gebhardt. O5H at 7th ret. E-8
Don Halsey, O5H at 7th ret. as E-9
Kirby Hoffman 72G at 7th, ret. as E-8
I've also run into a lot of ex ASA types in State Deparment communications...

I'm sure there are many others.. We were, the "top 10%" and those guys that stayed in usually moved up the enlisted ladder to at least E-8/E-9.. Many who married Thais, got out of MI and moved to Signal..

That last little bit is kind of a kicker. I was reassigned as a Teletype Op at Ft Gordon (Signal Corps), reenlisted for computer programming (AG) thinking I'd never see the signal corps again. In Japan in 1987, got a letter from Ft Gordon welcoming me to the United States Army Signal Corps. Signal had pulled all data processing, along with some other information processing activities, away from the AG Corps. From Japan, yeah, I went to Ft Gordon.

Was stationed there from 02/70 to 02/71. I would still be there if the Army would let me stay. Was 05h, working swing shift 1400hrs to 2200hrs. Then worked in MARS station until freques. went away. Best duty station in the world. Best people in the world. Most beautiful girls in the world. Best Commander was Col. Wm Powell (Bill on the athletic fields. Best sargent major in the world. Can't remember his name. Since we worked swing shift the softball field was always dark when we got off work. One o our guys went to him and asked if the lights could remain on while we practiced. That night not only were the lights on, butr he had several coolers of beer iced down for us. So many great memories.

Was anyone else there when the monsoons got real bad and Udorn flooded. We had to get around by those little boats because all the streets were flooded.

I was stationed at the 7th RRFS in 1967. Lived in tents & worked out of vans.
72B40 E-6 Training NCO Commcenter. I sent the 1st Critic out of Thailand.

I run a webste for the 7th: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/UdornVets/

We have approximately 200 ASA/AFSS/NSG folks there and have a ton of fun & photo's.
Please join us and tell war stories and probably meet some of your buddies.
Please provide you name MOS or AF equivlent and when stationed at Udorn.

Hello all--new to the site. I was in Ramasun in 73-74 and at Det j (DJWAR) mostly 73. I recently hooked up with Dave F again--we were stationed together in 73-74 and again in the early 90's in Germany--and now I am on a job in Bangkok and here he is! Small world. I have also kept in touch with Glen Courtney (the godfather of Det J)--he is in California--and for many years was in touch with Harve "Chief" Howard, who settled in the Tulsa area. I also have emails for Fred Schmitt. If anyone wants to give a shout I am at [email protected] I am trying to build a house in Udorn area this year.

Hi gang. I was stationed at the 7th RRFS in 1970-71. My mos was translator/interpreter and I was in a rock group called FOUL PIE. I remember the large wat, 5 Sisters restaurant, massages, jewelers, tilocs, artesian crappers and the town fairs featuring monkey ball soup. Anyone there during my time?

Fuzzykjun.. in tracking down a thai you'd need her full real Thai name (no nicknames) and hopefully the name of the village near Chiang Mai she came from.. Now, in saying she came from Chiang Mai, are you sure she came from Northwestern Thailand "Chiang Mai" or possibly she came from Sri Chiang Mai located in Nong Khai Province about 100km from Udon by road and on the Mekong River..?? I never saw too many non-Issan around Udon/Non Soong back then..

now you got me confused~! haha I thought I had something going. we went to her homeonce in a hired cab, we drove all day,, stopped at a river were they jumped in then at a big lake they said was a chiang mai tourist site but it was winter and out of season,, we drove more and spend the night at her familys village,, this was north and east of udorn,,when we left we went another girls house and spent the night and I think we came back along hywy 22,,, its been 35 years.. I am hoping to find someone in Non sung,, the town across from the 7th,, hopefully by email,,that I could send pictures too. anyone who was these at the time knew me well,, I had made myslef well liked among the whole area.. even if one of the bar girls from that time saw the pictures she would know me and Penn,,,,the someone I would hopefully get in contact with might be able to post in newspapers and such,,, penn might even have come back to the area as she had nothing going in her jungle village and a baby to take care of....anyway thanks for the feed bacck

she came from north eastern thailand,,, we had to cross into either cambodia or laos by bribing the guards on both sides of a bridge and then again when we left that country... kinda scary since ASA guys were prime meat for the Commies! just looking for a way to post pics in newspapers or online,,,,,

Fuzzy,

Maybe this will help. Sri Chiang Mai is NE of Udon near the Mekong. Grid C-2 on the map (click on the map for a larger view).
