Apple - what is next?

iPhone or iTrack: Apple under scrutiny

Researchers have discovered a file that contains precise details of where an iPhone and its owner have travelled during the handset's lifetime.

British security researchers say the popular iPhones and iPads made by Apple are tracking the movements of their users and keeping a record of everywhere they have been.

The two security researchers who examined the devices discovered a file which is stored on the phone and on the computer with which it is synchronised.

Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden say a position-logging feature is contained in iOS 4, the operating system for the iPhone and iPad, released in June.

It contains precise details of wherever the phone and its owner have travelled during the handset's lifetime........

Yes - but google doesn't charge a premium for doing so with their Android system ie you can be tracked by google for Main Street prices, rather than having to pay 5th Avenue prices to be tracked by Steve. :D

Apple - what is next?

There would appear to be other differences, besides cost, but you are correct randerson it is difficult to discover a major player in the digital world that is not out to screw the individual to maximise their profit.
The WSJ hired an independent consultant, Ashkan Soltani, who confirmed Kamkar's findings. Google declined to comment. The Guardian cites research by Swedish programmer Magnus Eriksson showing that Android devices keep a record of the locations and unique IDs of the last 50 mobile masts with which they communicated, and the last 200 Wi-Fi networks that it has "seen". These are overwritten, oldest first, when the relevant list is full. It is not yet known whether the lists are sent to Google. That differs from Apple, where the data is stored for up to a year.

People may bitch about the EU but (from past legal decisions against both Google & Microsoft) I imagine that their legal guys will be over this like a rash on Tuesday.
Sadly the individuals making the decisions in both America & UK sold out to the big interests a long time ago. They are all too happy to ignore how these companies make profits as a proportion of it fuels their live styles... :(

It would seem that the collection of a data for a year is a 'bug' & that Apple are currently working on a software release that will fix it.
Apple say that it only ever intended for this information to be kept for 7 days as that is necessary to help the equipment. This data helps the iPhone calculate location for services quickly.
