Attention Members

Several members have contacted me over the past couple of days about being logged out and then having to enter a recaptcha code to log back in. This usually happens when a member enters their password incorrectly multiple times.

It currently looks likes an anoymous user is selecting random accounts and attempting to guess their passwords for whatever reason.

If you don't have a good password already I strongly recommend changing it a.s.a.p. to something more secure e.g. a combination of letters and numbers and upper/lowercase letters.

Also there have been reports about Googles recaptcha having being cracked which has opened the flood gate to bogus registrations on forums worldwide.

Unfortunately this forum is one of the victims so I'm currently looking at ways around it.

I don't know how many members were affected by this anoymous user, but I know I was one of them. I had to enter the recaptcha code because of an excessive number of failed log-in attempts. A bit concerning.

Had it once last week and again this morning.

Had me this morning BUT no link or code window. Contacted Jackspratt he said he was OK so tried again 10 minutes ago, bingo, the window was there. Strange! I normally only have to login after a cookie clean up, once a week or so.

How many login attempts triggers this event?

Same here, about 3 days ago.

Just been able to re establish a link but as in the past there was NO CAPTCHA sentence in my previous attempts this morning. I have sent in a screen shot to your office.

Hi Bandung_Dero, I've replaced the captcha with an anti-bot question and answer mod to protect the forum and members accounts. Google's reCaptcha has been cracked so it's completely useless at the moment. All you need to do now is answer the question instead of entering a code.

It looks like several phpbb forums have been unsuccessfully attacked by a malicious party attempting to brute-force account login credentials.
