BA to scrap short flight free meals

Postby BobHelm » July 29, 2009, 6:37 pm

After 10am, passengers on flights lasting less than two hours will be served only drinks and snacks.

To be introduced from Monday, the economy measure comes at a time when thousands of BA staff have agreed to take pay cuts or go part-time to help the airline cater with the recession.

I think its a good move, its only a short flight, sure the passengers can put a snack or something in their bag if they can't wait to nibble something....or have something before you get on.

Well they say they will still serve drinks & snacks BM.
I used to fly Bristol or Birmingham/Dublin quite often, not a long flight at all. They nearly had to sprint with the trolleys & virtually drag the food back off some passengers for landing. If they gave me 1 of the small bottles of red wine I was happy :D :D
If it is really going to save 22 Million I cannot understand why they didn't do a long time ago..

Maybe it has just dawned on them, and now is the right time to do it to save themselves, yes i thought the real short flights are funny when they race up and down...even on a 50 minute flight everyone can do without all that stuff surely.....seems a highlight for some travellers though, how often do you see passengers take the THAI snack box of bits and bobs off the plane with them on a short one, i am just glad to get off it in one peice.....and i am thinking it could be worth all those millions too bh.

Some of what were once jocular terms about poor airline service such as "Cattle Class" and "Self-loading Freight" are increasingly becoming the new reality.

As financing the purchase of airport butties often requires heat-resistant plastic (or even a second mortgage), folk would be well advised to allow extra time before leaving home to put up some butties for consumption at the airport and on the flight.

As an aside, I can't remember the last time I saw a TV advert by any national carrier boasting about the quality of their economy class (although there do seem to be plenty for first and business) :-k

Me neither...i think the idea behind showing the 'glamour' of the upper classes to the masses Through TV ads..(especially During Coronation Street..lol) is that they think the viewer will get that idea in their head that economy will resemble something like that and they will get some 'similar' service....other wise why show 1st and buisness ads...all those travellers know what to expect anyway.....So there is a method in their madness i suspect.

Well I guess there are 2 ways of looking at it then BM.
1. The 22 mill is well needed (how be it not even a months losses)
2. Bit like stopping 'free coffee' - admirable, but a 'root cause analysis' would be better & well overdue!!!

I flew a three hour Icelandair trip out of LHR in June and they didn't serve any food either, unless you paid for it. All you got was a complimentary soft drink or coffee or tea. I must admit, I wasn't that bothered. :|
