Bangkok Airport Rail Link

Postby JimboPSM » February 7, 2011, 2:44 am

I arrived a few days ago in Bangkok - before travelling to Thailand I had decided to experiment and try the new express airport rail link from Swampy to the Bangkok City Air Terminal (BCAT) at Makkasan Station in downtown Bangkok.

In order to give it a really good test I would be attempting to use the service after nearly 24 hours travel and while carrying a large wheeled suitcase, a medium sized suit carrier (with shoulder strap) and a wheeled “cabin size” bag.

I did manage to get to my hotel - but my advice to anyone who is rather weary after a long haul flight and is also carrying a substantial amount of baggage is take a taxi.

For anyone still interested carry on reading below.

Most importantly, the real nitty gritty (for the uninitiated, the cost):

    1. Express airport link = 150 THB

    2. Taxi (meter) to Sukhumvit Soi 20 = 69 THB
So, at least from a financial perspective, it makes sense when compared to taking a taxi or limo (don’t know about the bus as I’ve not tried it).

Some of the problems I encountered were:

1. At Swampy:

    • There were signs for the rail service, but were not prominent to my weary eyes.

    • There is no apparent information on how to use the service.

    • Baggage carts cannot be taken down to the train platform or on to the train – you have to manhandle your baggage for the last couple of hundred yards or so.

    • Looking for a ticket desk to get and pay for your ticket is a fruitless task – you pay at Makkasan, ultimately I only got this information by asking a security person (who like the vast majority of Thai that I encounter was really helpful), the information may have been there somewhere but I didn’t see it.
2. At Makkasan:

    • No baggage carts when getting off the train so you have to manhandle your baggage all through the terminal (I didn’t see any baggage carts anywhere).

    • Needed to use two separate elevators to get from the train level to the ticket desk.

    • It was poorly signed for finding the ticket desk – it wasn’t just me being dumb, a German couple that I spoke to were also struggling to find where to pay and the way out.

    • Having paid, it was then poorly signed for finding the way out - the station is a bit like a huge empty mausoleum, from what I could see there is nothing inside the place, no shops, no restaurants and no bars.

    • The German couple and I followed a sign indicating Exit, Taxis and Buses, it took us into the right hand side of a large hall where there were no further signs that made any sense.

    • I wandered around this large hall looking for some sign of where to go but could not find any – fortunately a taxi driver outside saw that I looked like a possible passenger and came inside to see if I wanted a taxi, if he hadn’t I might still have been wandering around.
Some of the problems I had may have been exacerbated by it being a night time arrival, it may be better during daylight hours; I don’t know whether it was the reflections of lights inside the building, maybe fairly opaque glass or just me being weary and not really fully aware but I could not see any of the taxis that were parked outside the building.

Some good points:

    • The ride was very smooth

    • The trip was quick, although I didn’t time the trip it was certainly less than 20 minutes but I can’t confirm that it was the 15 minutes that is advertised (however the difference is not worth arguing about).

    • The taxi driver went straight on to the meter and the metered fare from Makkasan to my hotel was 69 THB.

Some further info, a Thai press release on “Check-In Service at Bangkok City Air Terminal, Makkasan”.

Excellent repost,Jimbo. It convinced me to take a taxi if I had multiple bags for sure! =D>

Might I suggest that you send your post to The Nation and the Bangko Post? There might be a chance that someone that could institute change might be prompted to take action, but at least other expats, like myself, and tourists could be saved a lot of inconvenience!

the POST has printed a couple of letters about the express, neither gave it the thumbs up. couple of weeks ago one of their reporters did an article on it . again critical. also pointed out that many international flights leave in the early morning. passengers on these flights cannot use the express as it is not running when they want to go to the airport.

I took the Airport Link two weeks ago at 06h30, at that time of day easy to get to from Sukumvit via Wittayu to Petchaburi etc. However upon arrival it was quite a long and convoluted ascent to reach the upper level where taxis unload. The place looked dead, though lights were on and a few workers around.

At the ticket desk in front or me was a western man with two Thai women, one of the women insiting they return outside and take another taxi, since their three fares to the airport would total 450 baht. The frustrated man indicated they needed to be at the airport in 15 minutes, though the boss lady led them outside back to the taxis. Classic.

I bought a ticket, and within one minute was in a train, and it left within another minute. Seems 12 minutes later we arrived at the airport, and it was quick and easy to go up the lift to departures. I did not check in luggage nor did I have any, so cannot comment on the Airport Link check in service.

Quite a splendid experience, though not sure the extra effort is worth the money savings, especially if peak traffic times vs getting on the freeway from Sukumvit. 229 baht taxi plus train vs say 400 baht for a taxi plus toll, probably takes the same amount of time "door to door." The train will make more sense for many, if ever the taxi fare increases to US$20-$30.
