Bangkok Hospital Udon Thani

Post by LoneTraveler » September 27, 2012, 9:30 am

I would like to hear of experience(s) when medical care was/is needed at Bangkok Hospital. When I lived in Jomtien, I spoke with many expats concerning the best hospital(s) in the area for medical care. I received reviews of personal experiences ranging from dreadful (would rather see a veterinarian) to excellent care. I have pre-registered in two of the major hospitals in Udon and considering doing the same at Bangkok. However, I have not read or talked to anyone in Udon about Bangkok Hospital.

The recurring theme concerning Bangkok Hospital in Pattaya/Jomtien is; regardless of the level of service, foreigners are treated as cash cows. The price of all services are unnecessarily, very high. And the feeling was, they were going to drain every last baht they could get from you. I suppose the same can be said for AEK from what I have read and heard from local expats. The same goes for the level of service there, which is rated from awful to excellent ( personal points of view)

Because I am an older expat, I would like to know where I can receive competent medical care in Udon Thani. I do have major health Insurance so going to the City of Bangkok or my home country for care, is an option but I prefer to be taken care of locally. I do not want to enter a hospital as a man and come out as a women because someone misread my medical chart.

I cannot speak for Bangkok Hospital group as I have no knowledge of it at all, however I can say that AEK is becoming as you say a 'Cash Cow' level of service as you have described although in all honesty I have never had a bad deal myself. Now I prefer Wattana opposite side of Non Prajak to Udon General Hospital, service and price reasonable, some expats also like the Fort Prajak Hospital ( known as the Military Hospital), never used their facilities but have heard its good. Your decision though.

Thank you Khun Paul for the advice. I too have heard Wattana Hospital is good some tell me better than AEK. The Administrator I dealt with there for pre-registration was pleasant and efficient. And my lady has her Thai health insurance there. I also heard the military hospital is good but many expats I have spoken with have had to endure long waiting periods for service. Also, I have been told by a Thai neighbor who is an insurance broker, that if you need medical care at Wattana, you must go between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. because most of the medical specialist arrive at 8 and leave the hospital by 5:00 p.m.

Therefore, if given a choice I would choose Wattana but in an emergency and I am not able to choose (accident, medical emergency during the night then I guess they will take me to the nearest hospital and if able, I will sort it out the next day.

That will depend on either , whose meat wagon gets to you first or which 'Rescue" team, as they are all on commission.

I would say the nearest thing to Bangkok hospital group in Udon is AEK ,,,,as already pointed out its a money beofe real patient care in my op ,,,,, experiences .....

Bangkok pattaya hospital ,,,,, 12 days stay 10 in ICU after gas explosion in 2007 ,,, 500k bill ,, trnsfered to an individual hospital in Satahip ,,,,,,not as moder just as good ,,,,,,,,further 8 weeks there 104 k bill inc over night care etc ,,,BKK hospital were not interested after the ICU had finished and just wanted to cream me for a glorified hotel room ... BTW i was badly burnt , they had me hovvering over an ice bath ready to put drips into my ankles yet wouldnt until my insurance deteils n card were checked out .... have nt got a good word to say about them as they also were the cause of a friends death as he was turned away and dies going to another hospital... this was in the national Thai press but was swept under the carpet and mr colovs balls shrunk would follow up on any story.

In Udon i have and my son have both used The General and Military hospitals ,the latter preferred IMO .

Some expats here have commented that Khon Kaen has better hospitals .... after a recent occurance where a good customer of the shop was transfered there after suffering a heart attack fully copus mentus , some medication adminsitered and passed away ,,,,leads me to be cautious about these claims .

As ever i am always wary about any subjects to do with hospitals and their services/prices

That included all privat hospitals in Udonthani and i will also put all private ones in Hua Hin to this list! i have nothing god to say about them and if the treat people and make business in europe like they do her...they all be in jail!

I am truly sorry for the severe accident you have been exposed and that the hospital fool people lurking situations like this. Unfortunately, this is a system they use and they lack any ethics of universal human value. I hope you get your life back after your serious accident and you can move on with your life. I myself have been a victim of some accidents where I have broken my neck twice. Today I am thankful that I am alive, despite the injuries I suffer from after accidents.

IT MAY BE THE TIME THAT WE CREATE A TREAD ON FRAUD MADE OF PRIVATE HOSPITALS AND COLLECT BOTH EXPERIENCES AND FACTS FROM EX PATIENTS HAVING BEEN CONNED??? :-k

I'd really like to hear people's experiences either way with the new Bangkok Hospital here.

There seems to be surprisingly little info about it, something of a non-event.

Another thread on hospital experiences in general would also be of interest to members, I'm sure.

Among us, we surely have a wealth of experience, both positive and negative, to share.

They seem to be spending a bit of cash on building work at the moment Jed.
The whole of the 'front' that looked onto the back of the night market has been removed.
The road there is completely closed off & steel fences surround it.

Maybe they are waiting for a 'relaunch' of the hospital after the work has been completed.
They seem to have done most of the destruction stage so it will be interesting to see what the construction looks like.. :D

Not a personal experience and involving birth so maybe not relevant to most of us . A close relative recently booked to go in there for a birth by caesarian operation. They had a package deal which included a three night stay in a large private room. All doctors and nursing services, food and bed for both patient and family carer. The room on the 7th floor was massive with seperate kitchen and lounge facilities.40"cable TV. The whole maternity unit had just been fully refurbished by the new owners, with an incubator unit which had large glass windows for viewing the new born.In all a really professional set up . All for an inclusive price of 50,000bht. Talking to the reception I found if priced individually the room was 3,000bht per night .
So if this is a relection of standards , I admit to being impressed.
Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

When members talk about standards its easy to forget their own views will differ on what is bad , mediocre , and excellent ,and by standards are we talking about the facilities or the actual patient care ,, sure a nice room etc is great however when a doctor wrongly diagnoses a serious illness all the fancy rooms n the world aint gonna help .

The missus mam god rest her soul chose the AEK after increasingly more frequent severe headaches n fainting spells ..miss diagnosed or a simple failure to spot the illness . sent home ,,,,,,,,later readmitted to Udon General where an exact and accurate diagnose was sort ,,in literaly 1 hour of being in the place ,,,,, suffice to say everyone involved is now very anti AEK and rightly so........

Fancy rooms n all the latest equipment dont mean buggar all if the docs/staff dont carry out their jobs in the corect manner , AEK is a business first ,, A hospital second and all thay are supposed to stand for third.

We've been visiting AEK for hospital services since the late 90's.. Overall the service has been good.. Over the last 5-7 years we've observed the "tack-ons" to services and an increase in prices.. I would say for general outpatient it is OK but would be wary of the specialist visits since that's when numerous tests and "visit me again" are added on... Also on AEK I don't think that it would be a good place to go after hours for trauma care.. They seem to have a duty physician or two on site with others on call. The military hospital or even Udon General seems to have more trauma experience..

MR Mash... I cant say it better my self!

After I broke my neck for the second time, I have big problems with dizziness which can sometimes develop into migraine-like headaches that pretty quickly leads unconsciousness if I can not lie down and rest. Obviously influenced this state of heat and high humidity when I hit easier. One time a few years ago, I was in Old carfour to shop food. After about 5 minutes, I noticed that I started getting headaches on the left side of the skull. While my vision began to wane and I got "tunnel vision". I tried to take me to the cashier, a distance of about 50 meters. I started getting hard to focus and realized that unless I could quickly find a place to sit down and rest, I would pass out. My wife had gone to seek some piece of clothing, I called her mobile and then I remember nothing more.

I started waking up in an ambulance. I did not know exactly where I was and felt anxious and vulnerable. Turned around and saw my wife who had anxiety and fear in the eyes .... Then I passed out again and woke up in the intensive care unit at the large state hospital. There I stay for four days and during that time made many in my opinion, very professional efforts to come to terms with my injury. I got a bed in a big room with about 40 beds divided into two sections. There were no private rooms available and the doctor asked me if I wanted to be moved to a private hospital. I said: No thanks, I'm happy if I can stay here and he said that it goes well and you would try to help me in the best way. While I was in the hospital, I experienced many things that I otherwise would not have been able to if I had not been hospitalized. I got to meet the real Thailand and my fellow patients and their relatives took very good care of me. They gave me fruit and water, when I was feeling really bad at the beginning of the stay, put another human being in a chair wide wind my bed, a person I've never seen but still came close to me and it was a strange and warm experience. This while life-sustaining interventions were made for a dying person dying just a few feet away! Here I look into the real Thai heart and after this experience, I have become a better person and my understanding of the Thai culture has increased a lot and This could happen while life-sustaining interventions were made for a dying person dying just a few feet away! Here I look into the real Thai heart and after this experience, I have become a better person and my understanding of the Thai culture has increased and thus, I have a better quality of life.

Doctors found very quickly the reason for my trauma. They found a minor injury to the frontal lobe of the brain that also some way affects my short-term memory, concentration, etc.. In addition, the second skull fractures that affect hearing, balance That doctors in Sweden totaly missed. Care was exelent and when I got better brain specialist told me that all the highly qualified doctors were at the State Hospital and in addition work extra as consultants in private hospitals. This means that the best qualified healthcare can provide only at the State Hospital because that is where the best resources are available. One should not blindly look at the shell, but it's the inside that counts. From this moment i only visit state hospitals and i have an equal experience from the state hospital in Cha Am.

WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES ANOTHER OPENS!
These days life seems pretty good and I eagerly look forward to the continuation!

A great post sir.

All the swish sofas n decoration , the beautiful reception staff , and nicely cut uniform mean nowt ,,, its a smoke screen to charge more for the same care received in a government funded hospital ,,, tizz my opinion the basic care a patient receives or the trauma care in emergency cases is the same or better in a state hospital ( UG , MILITARY) against a private "business run" hospital ... (AEK , PAV AND WATTANA) ,,,, the facilites may be cleaner /better but its the actual care that is administered that counts ..... nothing new in Thailand , i must add i did have abrief stay in a hospital in a rural town Ku Muang near Buriram ,, now that was something eye opening ,, twas like a scene form the a horror movie even the rats had overalls on !!

I may be wrong , as ever only my opinion .

I personally don't care where the man called 'John ' studied, it is the cost and patient care which is important, I agree, about the comments slick rooms and furniture if the medical side is poor.
Upon saying that I have found and based on my wealth of experience ( a family with 5 doctors and two nurses ) that the overall level of medical care is good at Wattana, Udon general is good for eye problems and as stated before I cannot speak for the military hopsital but I understand it is fair.

But as with all things you pays your money and take your choice and hope.

Hello! After reading the experiences of members on this topic, choosing a hospital is not going to be an easy task. Although, I am leaning toward Wattana and the Military hospitals. Too many negatives concerning AEK. And I do agree that a topic should be started to hear of in-hospital experiences both for and against. I realize that opinions will vary based upon a personal
point of view but one cannot ignore medical in-competencies versus effective and competent medical care.

When I was in Jomtien, I had regular appoints at a private clinic which was owned by a physician who spoke English well and trained and practiced in America. He told me when he retired from medicine in Thailand he got bored and opened the clinic. He performed blood work, checked blood pressure etc. and prescribed meds. He probably saved me from a medical melt down. Now I monitor blood work , blood pressure, and purchase the over the counter medications he was giving me at his clinic. He was blunt "your too fat" "you drink too much" "cut down on drinking and lose weight, and watch you diet and exercise. Words to Live By however, how many of us totally adhere to this advice, Better said than done.

I am thinking this may be the route for me; find a private clinic run by a competent physician with admitting privileges to Wattana if such a scenario exists in Udon Thani. Any thoughts, experiences in this area?

We have had several appointments at the New Bangkok Hospital. Cost for a Dr. visit less then Wyattana. Best guess they are operating on outpatient basis now, The Doctors we have seen also worked at Udon Hospital, same for Wyattana.

The hospital is getting much needed make over, floor by floor.

No Problems with Bupa or AIA Health Insurance no deposit required.

The important thing about John ( international Rep ) is he speaks fluent English. There is also a lady name Sawaatee good English. A supervisor.

We also have a family Doctor that works at the military Hospital, when he is not in the clinic. That is where I do my annual checkups. Go to the independent lab, for the blood work. Let the doctor advise me from there.

Hi,
A number years ago i had a accident. Broke my wrist and did my back in.
Told wife to call a ambulance. One came within 20 mins. and took me to the military Hospital. Had two x-rays on my wrist and two on my back, as well as pain killing injections. Had my wrist put in plaster and was told to rest my back. They asked me if i wanted to stay the day in the hosp. I said no id rather go home, I hate hosp..For the Amb., treatment, x-rays and after care i was charged 10,000B which i thought was reasonable. Claimed all back of my insurance later.
By the way, being over 70 now, i had to get other acc. insurance. Mine went through the roof at his age. The best i found was a accident ins. by AIA costs me 2300B a year. This is handy as i can use it when driving car, cheaper than getting seperate acc. ins. for car.
