If Bangkok goes under

Good question Maaka - Murphys law of expats will tell one never to take anything for granted and be prepared for the worst. Should the Internet in fact fail and no back up system available a domino effect will for sure be a fact. Shutting down the ATM/Bank system and well basicaly the hole administrative system ( within FROG this already seems to be a fact ;) ) for a uncertain time will for sure later show up in the crime rate statistics wherever this happens localy or nationaly. It would maby not be a bad idea to have a bit cash at hand and then have a plan B. - Lao and a functionally bank system (if they let us cross the Kong now the Inet has gone bye bye...

As I understan it is declared safe and they are digging extra canals around it. They will surely not finish that in time if the flood will reach the airport this time. There is an evacuation plan for the Thaiair planes relocating for U-tapao and other dry useable airports in land but what about all the other carriers scedulled - this can only end up in mahem so better lay back and watch and if going in ry get hand in a hydroplane ;)

ROFL! You got that right! ;)

If Bangkok goes under, there may be shortages of non-essentials and imports, but I expect we will be mostly unaffected. I've already whispered my thank yous to the Thaksin administrator for building all those canals around Udon, making all the rain a non-event for us!

Apparently the airport itself has just been reinforced with 10,000 sand bags and should be okay. However the road outside may be difficult. Just watched the TV news and the Future Park, not much further away on the same road, is totally flooded and the police are complaining about people parking their cars on the elevated motorway, to escape the water . So it sounds a bit chaotic outside . :-"

Update on my last post. Thai TV are now showing the airport itself to be surrounded by water, but even more worrying I should think, there are literally thousands of refugees from the flood camped inside the buildings .Couldn't quite make out what building they are in though, so it may not be the domestic terminal .

I heard this morning that there was concern over the airport, thas why I started the thread, because I kept hearing the words of the babe whos coming to her brothers wedding, but apparently according to some Thai bigwig, the airport has its own huge pumps, and should be ok, but if she is surrounded by water now, it will be a hard task keeping the waters at bay..

it may pay the wedding lady to have a backup plan if things continue, or the terminus becomes waterlogged..perhaps fly into Phon Pen, and from there to Laos and road the rest of the way..

there is going to be alot of poor and angry people after this, so keep your head down..Those Isaan people working in Bangkok, may well have lost thier jobs now due to the factory going under..its a testing time for the new PM

Starting to see shortages here in Ban Dung now. Our Tesco's shelves are less than 50% stocked and has even run out of plastic shopping bags and is buying them from the local vendors. Both 7-11s are not fairing much better.

Yes I noticed a lot of shortages in Tesco's last night, the whole isle of bottled water was empty and quite a few shelves with nothing on them. Builders merchants like Global and Home Pro are running out of stock like cement and tiles.

The wife and I flew out of Don Muang this morning. We traveled by taxi from Sukhumvit/Ploenchit area to the airport. As previously noted, lots of vehicles parked along the expressway and ramps. They are not abandoned, just parked on higher areas. The ramp going into Don Muang has cars parked on two sides with just a single lane down the middle for moving traffic to access the terminal entrance.

The domestic terminal is an emergency staging area and we went to the old international terminal to get our boarding passes and our flight was out of gate 24 which is in old international fights section. All domestic airlines were operating okay this morning but lots of passengers. Much relieved that we are back home in Udon rather than being in Bangkok.
