Postby laphanphon » October 7, 2009, 5:22 pm

PATONG, PHUKET: On a night patrol in the early hours of Monday morning, Patong’s top cop showed a crowd of shocked tourists just how much money Phuket’s beggars can make.

crowd was amazed to see a pile of notes and coins totaling more than 3,500 baht (approx USD 105.00).

The man said he collected the money in just three hours

for those that feel sorry for beggars, don't, they usually have more money per day than working, hence the begging. same as in the states, saw a program where the asked a begger in seatle why he begs, wasn't because he wasn't trained, or couldn't find a job, just the easiest job he ever had, average 500-600 bucks a day, and this was years ago.

people that need money, rarely ask for it.

There is a young boy that guides his ?blind? grandmother around the restaurants in Udon Thani begging for money. One day I watched them both leave the restaurant, as soon as they were out of sight of the restaurant they both started counting their money. I either witnesses a miracle as the grandmothers sight returned or an beggar scam, I will go for the latter.

I spent a couple of years in Phuket and particularly remember an old lady who regularly sat on the Bangla Rd pavement. Her bandaged legs or feet were rather pathetically red felt-tipped, but I would bet she makes a good living out of partying tourists.
Whilst actually selling, usually cheap junk, it's also amusing to see the 'mountain people' arrive in pickups or minibuses, which suggests more organisation involved than one might have imagined.

Some beggers are genuine..i hope anyway...What about the ones that drag themselves along the ground.....or the ones that are deformed, Hands/stumps/face...(always wondered is that polio...???) the poor soles on the ground are not a nice sight to see dragging themselves through all the crap and stuff....they do get some baht from me.

I sometimes give to blind musicians, but rarely!I don't like beggars and even though there might be a few that are deserving and on the ''up and up'',I have seen the same ones over many years in various spots, have personally seen the ''drop off'' by ''handlers'' in Bangkok, many times!

I don't know what it is ,but ,for me,I have a problem giving to organized beggars or charities that openly and aggressively pursue me.choosing to give selectively to those I personally perceive as worthy and in need at various times, always aware that there millions of people that are in dire straits and can use a helping hand.

There are a few beggars in Nong Khai, that are regularly in the same spot everyday and everyday, most of them are enebriated and filthy!I am turned off to this as I am to the children that are obviously being exploited by others!
