Bank fees

Postby nkstan » April 8, 2010, 6:10 pm

Transferred 1.6M baht from a KK bank in NK to a KK bank in Bangkok and was surprised that I had to pay 1020 baht to do it.

Seems like they use any avenue available to take money through fees. Deposited a large amount of US currency in Bangkok in December. They charged me a fee because my account originates in Udon. TIT.

Yep I haven't used an ATM outside of Udon in a very long time. So I wonder if I will see the 20 baht fee using my own bank? There are reasons the banks are doing so well and it has very little to do with the loan department.

Thai banks seem to be organized by province. Services within the province of your account are less than services outside that province. Make a deposit outside the province and there is a fee. Transfer money from outside the province and there is a fee. Use an ATM outside the province and there is a fee. Take a withdrawal with your bank book outside the province and there is a fee. It's a fee for all.

One slight anomaly I've noticed is if I use my debit card outside the province, say at Carrefour or Tesco, there is no fee.

So while traveling in country I try to take enough cash for incidental expenses, but use the debit card at hotels, gas stations, department stores, etc.

Why did you do a transfer Stan? I often withdraw from my Udon account and pay in to another branch of the same bank, immediately, no charge .Don't even see the cash . Sign a withdrawal slip and write a paying in slip for the other account. Admittedly not KK bank or for such a large sum , but I don't see that alters anything .

I've been charged in the same way that Stan has, for transferring an amount to a different branch of the same bank in another province (using withdrawal and paying slips). The amount transferred was higher than the maximum amount transferable at ATMs, which are also charged for.

Trubrit you didn't say whether the branch you were transferring to was in the same or another province.

In my experience you are charged for using a debit card in a different province. At least I have been, every time. The charge (20 baht) shows up on my bank account later, - it wasn't shown on the store or hotel's debit slips, which may explain the difference of opinions. ;)

Actually,I just went to the manager and told him that i wanted to transfer it and gave him the account name and number,I had no idea that there would be a charge until I signed the withdrawal slip and deposit slip, noted that th echarge was added.

I have sent smaller amounts to other province accounts, many times over the years 1-5K amounts, there has always been a small charge,I believe 20 Baht.I was in a hurry and didn't challenge the charge,I will drop by the bank at some convenient time and get a clarification, then post it when I do!

Stan, I was charged similar amounts for similar size transfers as yourself. Larger amounts - larger fees, - that's how they see it.

Arjay caused me to get out my BKK bank book. The only fees I find are for ATM withdrawals. But then again perhaps a debit card fee is hidden in some manner. My electricity bills are paid automatically from the account every month and the deduction is always 5 baht higher than the statement I get from EGAT. It's not recorded as a fee.

Transfer fees are lower if done online.

Don't worry Bumper banks still make lots off loans. Hard not to make money when banks get to loan money at 6-15%+ that they don't even have, speculate in the financial markets with money borrowed from the central bank at negative real interest rates, and should it all go tits up the taxpayers will go further in debt (to the banks) to bailout the banks. \:D/
