For those planning travel on or around these dates (especially Songkran) it is advisable to book flights and rooms well in advance to ensure that they are available.

Please note:

    New Year 2012:
Thai banks will close on Friday 30th December 2011 for four days, re-opening on Wednesday 4th January 2012.

    Songkran 2012:
Thai banks will close on Thursday 12th April 2012 for four days, re-opening on Tuesday 17th April 2012..

There is a possibility that, unless restocked during both of the above four day periods, some ATM machines may run dry.

Bank Holidays in Thailand for 2012

Postby Galee » December 24, 2011, 6:50 am

Jim, I think the 'special' holiday on the 3rd January brings a new meaning to "bank holidays". Meaning it's a holiday for people with cushy jobs in banks. :D
I've checked several calenders prior to doing the golf programme for next year and the 3rd is not mentioned anywhere?

Bank Holidays in Thailand for 2012

I always like to try and understand the logic for decisions in Thailand - I've found that almost always there is logic, but due to cultural and some other factors the logic may be different to mine.

I’ve checked back over the last few years and looked at the original BoT list and I believe that the holiday on Tuesday 3rd January is actually another “Substitution” day that lost something in the translation

In the previous years I checked, both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day were specified as Bank Holidays.

This year as both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day fall on a weekend I believe that the holidays for both the Monday and the Tuesday are effectively “Substitution” days (similar to the way Christmas day and Boxing Day are treated in the UK when they fall on a weekend).

Bank Holidays in Thailand for 2012

Postby Khun Paul » December 24, 2011, 5:05 pm

The 3rd of January has actually been approved and is a valid holiday what is still in the pipeline is possibly the 17th of April, but in January the Govt is meeting to decide holidays up to and including April.

here as with so many things they cannot or will not make a decision so everyone guesses what holidays are what , take the schools many close for Chinese new year even though it ain't a holiday.having worked in sopme schools it appears any day they can they shut saves working ( if that is what you call it ) .

Those that work in restaurants and shops are not allowed any more "Bank holidays" as their calendar is already full of "couldn't be bothered to go to work" days

Bank Holidays in Thailand for 2012

Postby JimboPSM » April 9, 2012, 10:58 am

There is a special bank holiday today which was not listed in the OP - this extract from the Bank of Thailand explains the reason for the special holiday:
Declaration of Special Holiday for Financial Institutions

1. Objective

The cabinet's resolution on 31 January 2012 has declared 9 April 2012 a special public holiday due to the royal cremation of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejraratana Rajasuda.

To allow people to participate in the royal cremation of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejraratana Rajasuda, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) therefore has designated 9 April 2012 to be a special holiday for financial institutions.
