Baskets on Wheels

Postby parrot » November 9, 2011, 3:35 pm

I have vague memories of the Hoover Brush man who came to our home back in the 50's with a kit of cleaning brushes and maybe even a vacuum cleaner in tow. Those days are long history back in the US.
In Thailand, we still see people carting baskets of fruit/snacks on their shoulders in town, and mini-Big C's on wheels, as we call them in the village, hauling an assortment of veggies/fruits/meats on the back of a motorcycle or in the back of a pickup truck.
Today we spotted this truck selling baskets. Not an especially uncommon sight.....but the wife insisted we stop for this one. I flashed my lights, he pulled over, and the wife carried on a long conversation with the driver before buying two of his wares. It turns out he's from Nakhon Phanom (east of Udon and along the Mekong) where my wife and I met 39 years ago. My wife spotted the license plate and knows that baskets from NKP are often of better quality than others. The man told my wife the baskets are made in his village and he ends up on long journeys traveling to small villages to sell them.
As the price of gas goes up, I'd expect these sort of salesmen to die out........they haven't yet, but it may just be a matter of time. Sort of like seeing a buffalo plow a rice field!
