Beer Lao Dark

Postby tamada » January 23, 2011, 10:14 pm

I will be back in Udon mid- February with buddies visiting from out of state. My regular 'importer' of Beer Lao Dark isn't doing the border shuttle any more so can this stuff be bought by the case (bottles) in Udon?

Thanks,
tam

I used to give my neighbours mate 1000 baht for a case of 24 bottles when he was running back and forth to Laos ('cos his Lao wife was having a baby). That included his tip. He was happy. So was I. Then she had the baby and his trips are few and far between.

Latest from my Lao beer border runner... the Thai Customs are being real arses and nailing everyone and everybody with booze so he has it on layaway on the Lao side.... Bugger!

Anyone seen either variety of beer Lao in Udon or confirm it can still be had in Makro Nongkhai? Prefer bottles but.

Wife is buying beer fridge manana too!

Fuzzy Kens sells the beer Lao Blonde, don't know if he would sell by the case though and if he did you would no doubt have to pay a premium. The dark stuff is the business though, however never seen any for sale in Udon, unfortunately!

i always send my wife over to buy some wine , she always come back with 2 boxes ( = 10l) they do not complain this, even when they go 2 person and bring 5, she all ready had to show what she bought and did not have any problems,
the problems are when really buy to much, i hear they have a system there , the thai customs get tips of the salesman of the shop in laos in case somebody buy to much cigarettes, alcohol etc..., so when you come at the thai side the thai custom will follow you and your car and stop you ( we call them in our country flying custom) , with result loosing a lot , paying a big fine , and later on the salesman on the other side will get his share of the cake...., so if you are buying to much better spread your purchases over different shops to avoid this...

Imported!

My runner ditched the boxes and managed to bring it in inside regular plastic carrier bags.

Sorted!

Tops grocery at the complex sells Beer Lao Dark. However, I bought the last 10 bottles last night. We asked the cashier if they were going to have more. He wasn't sure, said depends on how well it sells. I think if there is enough interest they will stock it regularly. The downside is that it's 65 Baht a bottle, expensive but still cheaper than bar prices (if you can find it). The upside is that it is Beer Lao Dark, my favorite.

Beer Lao Dark

Postby TJ » April 23, 2011, 2:10 am

I've been purchasing the occasional 6-pack of Beer Lao in the U.S. for about nine dollars (270 baht) or about 45 baht a bottle. Tastes the same as those I drank in Udon Thani.

Makes me curious about the cost of production of one bottle of Beer Lao and the nature of the various taxes and add-on costs.
