Where is the best golf course in Udon Thani?

Postby thaistix » May 13, 2006, 12:28 am

Can anyone tell me where is the best golf course(s) in Udon? I had only played once at the one near Nong Samrong. I would like to play the whole 18 holes. The one near Nong Samrong was just 9 holes.

There are five courses in or near Udon and I've played all of them a number of times, my personal ranking of the local courses is:

1 - Victory Park near Nong Khai (18 holes - 4 x par 3, 10 x par 4, 4 x par 5)
2 - Sri Thani (9 holes - 2 x par 3, 5 x par 4, 2 x par 5)
3 - Udon Golf Club (also known as 18k - distance from Udon in kilometres on road to Nong Bua Lamphu) (9 holes - 2 x par 3, 5 x par 4, 2 x par 5)
4 - Airforce (Lions Military) (9 holes - 2 x par 3, 5 x par 4, 2 x par 5)
5 - Army (Nong Samrong) (9 holes - 5 x par 3, 2 x par 4, 2 x par 5)

I enjoy all the local courses in different ways, however if I was to rank them in of order of difficulty (with "1" being easiest) it would be:

1 - Sri Thani
2 - Airforce (Lions Military)
3 - Army (Nong Samrong)
4 - Victory Park
5 - Udon Golf Club (18k) - not for beginners!

The "best" course taking into account all aspects of course layout, course maintenance, changing facilities, golf shop, caddies (buggies available), catering, parking etc is without doubt Victory Park - and it is the only 18 hole golf course in the area.

AB, unfortunately as you say, Sri Thani is not on the map..

Approximate directions (from memory so you will probably struggle to find it):

Follow Tahan road from Prince Prajak Monument Roundabout to traffic lights at junction with the ring road, carry straight on over the junction for about a mile or so where you will need to turn right, however as the road is a dual carriageway this needs to be done by a U-turn (I think near a footbridge over the road) and then after returning towards Udon for about two or three hundred yards turn left (there is some kind of general store on the corner), follow this road for about two or three miles and the entrance to the golf course should be on your right hand side, if not you may be lost for ever #-o

Alternatively you may find someone at City Lodge, Irish Clock or Harry

The Thais's often call it Bahn That golf course.

Just to add another 18 hole course, which is in Khon Kaen province, called Ubolrat Dam. Heading south from Udon, after about 80km and a couple of kilometers past Nam Pong you will see a big sign to the dam on the right. Use the next u-turn and then follow the turning all the way to the end (25 km). At the end go straight through the security check-point and continue down the road, you'll see the club house on the right.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but I thought you golfers would enjoy it:

Played Sri Thani twice this week. Not difficult to find. From crossroads at southern end of ring road head south. Go under 2 concrete bridges, at second do a U-turn and then first left. Course is about 5k along road, pass a lake. Course was picturesque. Not that difficult, but greens in fairly good condition.
Clubhouse is a little basic, but meets all requirements. Lockers are available. Showers were cold. I had one good caddie, one indifferent.
Would be quite happy to play here once or twice week.

Played Victory Park, Thursday and Friday. Not that easy to find. A friend told me to do a U-turn at the radio mast? Forgot to tell me there are about 6 on the way from Udon. There is one sign telling you to do U-turn about 12k from Nong Khai, then travel back to Udon for about 1k and left at junction that has a big "5" sign at junction.
Considering its out in the middle of nowhere I was impressed on first impressions. Nice club house and resturant. Good changing rooms, showers a little grubby. Payed 750 Baht, which includes caddy, but not the 200 baht expected tip.
Obviously far better than Sri Thani. Course was playing long from blue tees. Fairways saturated, no run on ball. Shot 86 Thursday, which wansn't too bad with 3 double bogies. Played absolute c**p Friday. Just had to go and buy some more balls. Had a good caddy Thursday. Fridays was probably the worse I have had in Thailand. Didn't know yardages and once forgot to mark my ball on the green before lifting. Other caddies had a good laugh about it.
From my experiences this week, I'm sure Udon's golf courses will provide enough interest and social life, should I come here to live.

Ladies are always welcome to play providing they have met certain minimum condions before commencing their round:

There is supposed to be a "new" course opening in Khon Kaen. Has anyone had a chance to either see it or play it? Where is located? Any new information on it would be appreciated as I have found it to be a well kept secret. Even people in Khon Kaen are not aware of it.
