BP will be paid $250million (£161million) by the maker of the blow-out preventer that failed during last year’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The oil giant has agreed a deal with contractor Cameron International, which is not an admission of liability by either party, to settle all claims between them.

BP will apply the payment to the £12.9billion trust set up to meet claims resulting from the disaster, as well as the cost of natural resource damages. It has so far paid out about £4.82billion.

BP has settled with its Macondo well partners MOEX and Anadarko, as well as with Weatherford, maker of the float collar used, but remains in dispute with two of the biggest companies involved, Transocean and Halliburton.

The dispute with Halliburton was ratcheted up a few days ago when BP made a court filing accusing Halliburton of destroying evidence and records relating to the disaster.

Interestingly Halliburton has not actually denied the accusation per se but has said "... however, we believe that the conclusion that BP is asking the court to draw is without merit, and we look forward to contesting their motion in court"
