British Passport changes for Thailand

Postby BobHelm » January 28, 2010, 6:52 pm

I know, strictly speaking this probably should have gone in World News, but I thought it would very quickly get swallowed up there.
From 8 March 2010, passports for British Nationals will no longer be processed in Bangkok. They will be processed and printed centrally in a Regional Passport Processing Centre. Further details will be published soon.

Until that date, you can continue to submit your passport applications here in British Embassy Bangkok. We will update this website with further instructions from that date.

I gather that the actual production of the passport will take place in Hong Kong for SE Asia...

If the experience is anything like I enjoyed in China, this should (hopefully) not be a big problem.

Oz passports are only issued in Oz, London and Washington (or that was the case at least in 2005). I applied for a new passport at the Oz Embassy in Beijing, and received my new one (ex Canberra) in 5 working days. That was less time than it took for my previous passport to be issued when I was living in Oz in 1995.

Everything goes in the diplomatic pouch, and so movements are expedited.

I would imagine the UK set-up will be similar.

Think it depends on the meaning of "processed in Bangkok" My last one obtained by post to Bangkok embassy shows place of issue as London.

Well thanks for that Jack, maybe not as bad as I anticipated then. Although I still rather do see it as yet another reduction in the services it provides to UK citizens, of which there were few enough in the first place. :(

I am surprised by that TB. Mine clearly says place of issue as FCO and not UKxx.

If anyone needs to get a new passport soon, I have a couple of spare C1 (over 16) and C2 (under 16) application forms, which I obtained a couple of months ago. I have also got a spare BMD 001/007 form (Application to register an overseas birth).

butterfly, you can download from British Embassy site at most internet cafes, not expensive, although the C1 runs to 4 pages, the instructions also run to another 4 & the passport picture instructions run to at least 4 as well..

Can they use the British Embassy?

Wouldn't it be more accurate to call it the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Britain and Northern Ireland?

There is no British embassy in Northern Ireland, however there is a british Embassy in Southern Ireland located at:

It is called the British Embassy In Ireland

British Embassy, Dublin, Ireland
British Embassy
29 Merrion Road
Ballsbridge
Dublin 4

It is also called in other countries such as the United States of America - The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Embassy but most people use the short form 'British Embassy', which can be found at 3100 Massachusetts Ave, NW, Washington DC 20008
Telephone: (202) 588-6500
Fax: (202) 588-7870

Citizens from the British Isles (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) now commonly called the United Kingdom are deemed to be UK citizens.

If further clarity is required I would suggest contacting the Foreign and Commonwealth Office whose remit covers British Embassies worldwide at:

FCO London
FCO
King Charles Street
London SW1A 2AH
Telephone: 44 (0)20 7008 1500

My point is that not all residents (citizens) of Northern Ireland consider themselves British.
Indeed, they can carry Irish passports.

And then they would have to go to the Irish Embassy for renewal - I believe the nearest one to Thailand is in Malaysia...
