I am retiring at the age of 57 with 200k US in my back pocket and 500K US as savings, from which I hope to draw about 25K a year from that, at 60 I have a frozen pension kicking in with a lump sum of 25K and an extra 6 k a year. That will have to do me until I die.

Although it is always wise to take what OT says with a pinch of salt (& a smile :D ) I think that it is important to remember that he is working in Africa as an expat employee. From my time (too short :D ) of doing similar I expect that he is not boasting when he claims that he has a considerable income.
However, expenditure usually expands to keep pace with income so I am not surprised that he is slightly confused that someone can live so cheaply.
It is important to decide what you are actually including in your 'expenditure' when considering a budget. If a car is a necessity - because of a need to go long distances to obtain supplies, for example - then it is not fair to exclude that cost from the monthly budget just because it was purchased outright. Eventually it will need to be replaced & so 'something' must be included for that cost monthly to establish a realistic budget. the same is true of housing and other large, but infrequent, costs as well !!

I can't say I have ever been in a well paying job, most just about or below average, but I've always been happy and always had what I need. I drive a car until it can drive no more, I don't need to impress anybody. I don't go out drinking and clubbing, I prefer to stay at home with friends and make some food and buy cheap beer. I like my fitness, my reading, my chilling and my cable, and my internet. I have done my time with bargirls, now I just want to chill.

hahahahahahahhaahhaahahah Very funny NMP!

It used to be guinness when i was a younger man but I moved to the US when i was 22 and spent 7 years there! Its hard to get a decent pint of guinness anywhere else but Ireland and the Americans brew theirs in Conneticut. Its horrible and the head is not creamy and its actually brown with a lot of bubbles in it. I didnt really like American beer so i used to drink Labatts blue when there. Then when i came home I found Id actually lost my taste for it and stated to drink Heineken!

I do believe from reading another thread that the clock has a hallway decent pint of the black stuff but as Guinness doesnt travel well, even to England Ill have to try it myself!

Sorry i know thats an off point topic!

OT's not as stupid as you think. Here, listen to this, I faxed over 12,000 GBP to buy a Toyota Vigo about 5 or 6 years ago, I sold the thing for 10,000 GBP a couple of months ago, I also bought a bit of land, amongst others, for 330,000 baht 3 years ago, and I just sold it for 400,000 baht via my laptop a couple of weeks ago, together with the exchange rate I've made 2, 3 or maybe even 4 grand for the WFB's. Happiness is fluck all to do with living in a village without a pot to p1ss in, unless you think it is.

OT....wisdom...... \:D/

That's a crap philosophy.
Either your on drugs or the African sun has baked your pee brain. I retired at 53 fully funded 8 years ago and survived 2008 OK, and lived here in the village without problems. WTF is the difference between making money on line through investments and buying/selling assets.

You in your lack of knowledge are stereo typing all retired Farang into what little you see in Thailand! Grow up!

TheDude has noticed that all Thais refer to themselves in the third person; i.e., thedude will now make a point.

This is great when you're trying to learn people's names; i.e., Dao is going shopping now.

Who? Oh you! OK, I get it.

Actually, I think referring to themselves in the first person is considered rather grand here; i.e., I have written enough for 1 week.

Well, la de da, la de da. Layin' it on a bit thick, eh whah?

I wonder why the The Third Person feels he has to explain all the time how much money he has and how good he is in making money. Weird. There might be a psychological answer of sort to that though.

JR, take a good look at the subject title to this thread. Now, OT might be a bit of a div, but when someone mentions the word budget are they talking about money? It's confusing isn't it.

You could be right. I'm still going to get paid today though and send a lump of it to my wife and kids to do what they want with. The rest will be spent on WFB's and beer and a new tyre for the 4x4 which I burst last night driving back p1ssed as a fart from a meeting.

OT.......getting a hammering from the very happy villagers......... \:D/

Chriss, your speculation about OT is hardly true. Without even knowing you I am sure I am younger than you, I have been to many monthly get togethers, christmas parties, and have never hidden my face in the Udon community, Iv'e never seen you around. However I do agree with you when you say I have "stuff all". I am nowhere near having everything I want yet so I will keep working until I get it. Though, 30k a month won't get me it.

OT............ \:D/
