Burma generals 'sign Aung San Suu Kyi release order'

Reports are coming out of Burma saying the military authorities have signed an order authorising the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

But hopes that the Nobel laureate would be freed on Friday appear to be fading.

A leader of her National League for Democracy told 2,000 supporters gathered at the party headquarters to go home and return on Saturday.

Ms Suu Kyi has been detained for 15 of the past 21 years, and her house arrest term expires on Saturday.

There has been increased police activity outside her house in Rangoon, but as yet no official confirmation of any release order.

However, Ms Suu Kyi is not expected to accept a conditional release if it excludes her from political activity.

IMO a short lived propaganda exercise to take the heat away from their bullshlt elections. She'll be banged up again at the first opportunity. A very brave lady, there are many, most, ALL politicians in Thailand who could take a leaf out of her book.

True, BUT as she is still, technically a "criminal" that stops her from seeking the political power that was illegally denied her by the self same Generals.
They are, indeed, despicable, but they may well find that the democratic genie is not so easily put back in the bottle as they wish...

Release of Aung San Suu Kyi

Prime Minister David Cameron has welcomed the release of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner has been detained for 15 of the past 21 years.

The PM said:

“This is long overdue. Aung San Suu Kyi is an inspiration for all of us who believe in freedom of speech, democracy and human rights.

Her detention was a travesty, designed only to silence the voice of the Burmese people.

Freedom is Aung San Suu Kyi’s right. The Burmese regime must now uphold it.”

i dont think so .

the burma chief army boss , now wears a suit , not a uniform .
he,s been given a sniff of the mega bucks available to him ,
from the multi national companies, as they prepare to invest in the new democratic burma, :-k
thaland will also benefeit , gowing from strength to strength ,
as it assists burma in it,s transition to industrial modernisation .
