Bus Accident

Postby johndischert1 » February 21, 2011, 8:46 am

I was in a major bus accident returning from Bangkok on the 15th of February, the bus we were riding tried to avoid an accident occurring in front of us, he did that but flipped the bus by over steering. He had to going 65-70 miles per hour and it was raining. 15 went to a emergency clinic (5 or more were later transported to the hospital) and 5 went directly to the hospital. One person is in a coma and lost their arm. The second major injury, the bus drivers arm was under the bus and they cut it off to get him out. The rest were the usual broken bones etc. Mine and my grandchildren, who were traveling with me less so. They were checked out X Rays etc. just seemed to be banged up. I on the other hand, have major bruising, six stitches in my arm and hundreds of smaller cuts from the glass we were laying on, bus flipped. My question can I recover the medical expenses for myself and grandchildren or is it better to just pay the bills and forget getting anything. We were traveling what is usually referred to as an orange bus, not a tour, goes from Nong Khai to Bangkok and back. Any advise or similar stories would be of interest.

If you've already paid I think your have a problem recovering them without incurring more expense. Maybe the best thing to have done was to refuse to pay them, insisting the Bus Companies insurance, (if they have any) meet your expenses. Easier said than done I know.

The bus MUST be covered at least for Para Bor (compulsory 3rd party insurance) to be legally registered. I'd be seeing a lawyer at the slightest hint that they are refusing to pay.

My self-inflicted Thai vocabulary for the past week has been 'accidents'. Like the van heading toward Wat Ban Thad that ran into a cement truck outside of Khumphuwapi killing 5 nuns. Or the Korat-Udon-Sri Chiang Mai bus that flipped at the 204km marker in amphur Khong (อ. คง) on 10 Feb....another 5 died and 30 injured. Looks like a tire blowout was the cause of the accident.

Then there's the Amway van that was cut off by an 18 wheeler near Prachuapkhirikhan province, killing 4 on 18 Feb.....and today's news of a bus going off a cliff in Nan province killing 14 teachers and a van slamming into an 18wheeler killing 5 foreigners near Cha-am.

This is just a sample of the biggie's in the past 10 days or so.....many many many more onesies and twosies that didn't make the front page. I'm about ready to move onto another interesting/common subject.....let's see......maybe 'murders'
