Cambodia/Thailand dispute

Postby parrot » May 11, 2011, 7:04 pm

I've watched Somtow Sucharitkul conduct Thailand's orchestra on UBC a few times......always looked like an interesting guy (at least a capable conductor....for what I know about that art?!)

I came across his blog today.......he provides an interesting commentary concerning the ongoing dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.
http://www.somtow.org/2011/05/whats-in-map.html

Up to this point, I've been of the opinion that Thailand has to live with the International Court ruling back in the 60's that basically gave the temple to Cambodia....Thailand signed off on that opinion. It seemed to me that Thailand only raised the BS flag after the site was being considered as a World Heritage site ($$$$)......which is about 50 years after the ruling was signed.

I'm not in agreement with all that Somtow writes, but he provides an interested perspective on the issue for those who may be interested.

FWIW, Somtow was born in Thailand, grew up in several European countries and was educated at Eton and Cambridge.

Some where I read a suggestion that the 2 countries should do a mutual /cooperative ownership of the site.Changing the guard on a monthly basis, which could be a tourist attraction in itself.I thought it was a brilliant suggestion!
