Can you give up Thailand

Postby old-timer » September 10, 2011, 2:20 pm

Can you give up Thailand ? Do you love Thailand so much that you could never just pack up and leave ? Have you put so much into Thailand that you feel you that giving up Thailand is not an option ? Have you put yourself in a position that your stuck with Thailand ?

OT enjoys Thailand, however I do think I could just as easily do without it.

Can you give up Thailand

Sure I could.I never lock myself into anything I can't give up!Sometimes the choice is hard and I choose to not make the change.
My life is very relaxed and easy in Thailand, since I am at an advanced age and not rich,it suits me better than anywhere else that I know about at the moment.
I have responsibilities also, that I take very seriously and would not abandon!I planned on taking my dog with me and moving back to the USA to experiment at being a GGF to 9 kids I have never met, once my daughter is in University! But since The dog can't go and I don't know anyone that would give her the care and attention I would want her to have,I will stay here until one of us kicks!

Can you give up Thailand

My wife and I came here with plan B in the hip pocket being, maintain the ability to walk away from whatever we pour into the country, no regrets. We could do that today, as easily as 15 years ago, although we have no plans to do so.
Whenever we visit our daughter in the US, I'll get a tinge of feeling that maybe life would be better in the US......but then reality strikes: I walk into a dentist without an appointment, I fix a TV for less than a new one, I overpay a maid when I couldn't underpay one back in the US, and maybe most important, we have an acre of mostly landscaped land that I couldn't even think of owning/maintaining back in the US. Certainly the neighbors there wouldn't approve of my outdoor showers.....oh, and God forbid, hanging the clothes on a line to dry.

Any chance your feelings are related to "My wife is a nutter and I'm looking forward to the day she clears off. Twice I've been married now and I'm well up for another one. I like giving away houses to ex-wives."?

Not really, I am just as interested in Thai WFBs as any other. And my wife is bonkers.
Something I read on Talkers that LA put on there was about people working illegally and getting caught and fined. But what stood out from it all was the harrowing thought held by falangs of not being allowed back into the LOS. For me, I found that interesting which lead me on to this topic.
If someone said to you that your not allowed ever to return to Thailand, other than maybe feeling a little disappointed would it bother you that much ? And also - If you really want to leave after realising it's not for you - can you ?
People are shoving themselves into a corner I suspect they can't get out of. It needs investigating.

OT will end up pensioner in Udon with his crazy wife I should imagine. That's because I'll want to and have been around those parts long enough to know exactly what to expect and what I can get away with.

Can you give up Thailand

With the new "Miracle Thailand" campaign (at a mere cost of 8billion-ish baht to promote), maybe I'll have to change any idea of ever leaving this country. Imagine if the 'miracle' is the sort that Ponce de Leon was looking for!
While I always thought "Amazing Thailand" was a bit over the top, the powers that be have topped it with "Miracle Thailand". Unless they're banking on 3G finally being formally approved this year! That'd be a miracle of the first degree! All those people who have paid all that money for 'smart phones' will actually be able to use them as they're designed!

Nice topic. I'll dust it off.

I observed that the Mrs. became reclusive when we gave living in the States a shot, so if she was willing to sacrifice for me, I felt I could step up and do the same for her happiness and well being. She's a bonafide Isaan "country girl" at heart and it is clear this is where she belongs. So here we are.

I do sorely miss the companionship of my own here, though. Not many Black Americans around to chat it up with - and none at all in my age group. I'm sure that will improve as time goes by just as it has dramatically improved for others over the past 6 or so years.

I've fully committed to life in LOS, but maintain multiple Plan Bs at all times. One being to sell everything here, pack up the family, and live a comfortable suburban lifestyle outside some small town where I can hang out my shingle and earn a decent living again. Perhaps the kids will be enough to keep her happily occupied. Perhaps we could move close to her BFF (who has 3 kids and a marriage on the rocks) and they can be as close as two peas in a pod again. Kids would DEFINITELY benefit and would not be subjected to the rampant Colorism here. In fact, if that happens to my son when he goes to school, we are soooooooo frigging OUTTA here. I've experienced rampant racism growing up in the States before and I'll be damned if I'll let him experience the taunts and such from some misguided runts here knowing that in the States, both my kids would be popular and well received by their peers. States have changed a lot.

So, yes...if I had to do it, I could. We'll know in 5 or so more years...

Thanks morti - but I lost interest very early. Or to be more precise, as soon as I saw the flag over his right shoulder.

Did it answer my question about who took the video?
