Here's an article about PTT's interest in Carrefour.

PTT, Thailand’s largest oil conglomerate, looks to buy Carrefour
Sunday, August 22, 2010.PTT Plc, the country’s largest oil conglomerate, is looking into the possibility of buying out Carrefour (Thailand) to further expand its retail operations, reports said, citing an informed source at the PTT.

PTT looks to buy Carrefour

Prasert Bunsumpun, the president and CEO of PTT, surprised analysts in a meeting on Thursday night by revealing the company might diversify into the retail business through Carrefour hypermarkets. The Thai assets are estimated to be worth about US$600 million or 19 billion baht.

When Carrefour announced some of its Southeast Asian assets were for sale two months ago, the interested bidders in the Thai operation were rumoured to include Berli Jucker (BJC), Tesco Lotus, Saha Group and Big C. However, PTT is only the second company after BJC to confirm its interest.

Mr Prasert said that even though PTT was an energy company, retail sales were not "too far" from its core business.
“We don’t want to be Central [Department Store], but as an oil company we can do a lot more than you would imagine if you are open to it. The trend in Europe and England is for petrol dispensers providing service to motorists at Carrefour hypermarkets. So couldn’t that be possible here?” he asked rhetorically.

When Carrefour put fuel pumps at its hypermarkets, it drove up sales of both the stores and of fuel, he said.

“Countries like Thailand that have been dependent on manufacturing exports are most affected,” said Verghis, who covers Thailand and four other Southeast Asian countries. The World Bank released its latest forecasts for Thailand and other economies in East Asia and Pacific on Tuesday. The global economic slump shut down what has been, for the past three decades, the main engine for Thailand’s economic growth: exports.

The Thai government announced an economic stimulus program totaling 117 billion baht ($3.34 billion). The program included a host of short-term measures to boost household consumption and assist lower-income families.

The government is now preparing a second stimulus package worth 1.6 trillion baht ($45 billion). Among other initiatives, this package focuses on public investment in infrastructure projects, which the government hopes will help create 1.6 million jobs. “The infrastructure investments, if implemented, will help generate growth and improve Thailand’s competitiveness,” said World Bank. “However, it is worth noting that financing for infrastructure has been available for the past few years. What has suppressed investment was not funding, but rather political and institutional constraints.” While the impact on the real sector has been larger than expected, the global crisis has not shaken the Thai financial sector.

The World Bank attributed this to Thailand’s strong macroeconomic fundamentals; low external debt coupled with high international reserves; and a sound financial sector, which has undergone a series of reforms following the 1997 crisis.

"is there any future in all of this?"
I've been asking myself the same question.......for the past 7 or 8 years......and yet the building continues. And in case you've never been to the St. Mall store, don't worry, soon there'll be another on the other side of the city (near the road to Gutjap).

I went into Carrefour yesterday.
We were out & about, I wanted to buy some cheese...Mrs. was hungry
So it had been a while since we had gone in there & I knew most places would be busy (Thai Sunday shopping :D ) so I suggested that we went there - which we did.
Quiet was an understatement parked easily & it is probably one of the smaller supermarket car parks. Went inside, no more S&P bakery :( , no more Vietnamese restaurant. A few of the outlets in the food hall were empty, but I am not sure if that was because it was Sunday and 4ish. or now the norm. Selection in the food hall was the worst of any of the food halls about town. Just to top my trip off there had been some sort of 'incident' in the area where they sell cheese & so all the shelves were empty & staff were standing around watching 1 member cleaning them down... :(
If someone does not take them over quickly & instigate a major shake up then they are going to be taking over real-estate only.
Frankly it is the last place I will go for anything for a long time...

When Carrefour started in Udon Thani, they had a very fine range of products, such as a great cheese assortment.
But it is always a matter of demand whether such a range can be maintained.
Obviously the demand was too small.
Nowadays they still have some nice products which we cannot find in other supermarkets, but Carrefour lost a lot of its attraction. I still buy there but not with the same frequency.
We must accept that there are too few foreigners here who can or are prepared to pay some more for a better range of products. Which means that there is no future for Carrefour unless they change their policy.

You have to imagine that this would mean its' closure in Udon, if a Tesco bid was successful. Would be ridiculous having a Tesco next door to a Tesco, without the fact that there would then be 4 Tesco supermarkets in Udon...

Tesco has joined the list of companies hoping to acquire the south-east Asian stores of French retail giant Carrefour.

The UK’s largest retailer is one of ten bidders involved in the £650 million auction for Carrefour’s 61 stores across Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia .

Other bidders are thought to include Japanese supermarket group Aeon, Singapore retail group Dairy Farm and France’s Casino Guichard Perrachon.

Tesco already operates a large number of grocery stores in south-east Asia and is keen to expand further; highlighting the region has providing a "significant long-term growth opportunity".

The company currently runs 663 shops in Thailand and 32 in Malaysia and is looking to grow its Malaysian business by 27 per cent this year.

Analysts predicted that Tesco’s aggressive expansive plans will see it overtake Carrefour as the world's second biggest retailer by the end of 2012, with US retailer Wal-Mart expected to keep its number one status.

Despite putting its south-east Asian hypermarkets up for sale, Carrefour said it will remain highly active in China, where it has a large presence, and will continue to operate stores in Indonesia and Taiwan.

If anybody is missing purchasing French cheeses then can I suggest try Udon Delice,to the right of entrance to Ban Worachan resort on the ringroad going towards Global House.Alain, the owner, said a few weeks back he was attempting to contact Lee and UM to be a sponsor.
Carrefour used to have a decent selection and was the place I went to, then Tops at Complex after Carrefour had restocking problems but Alain has over 50 types in stock. 8)

I've read several times in the past couple of years that Udon Thani to Nong Khai and surroundings are being built as a future lower cost alternative for Asian expats to retire to.

...and there are also those who think the proposed rail-link direct from China will be a boon for Udon in 2015 and beyond. May be unrelated, but the one-family-one-child policy has resulted in not enough Chinese brides. Interesting also is that the top Udon schools are teaching Chinese as an elective versus learning English...
