Digger

Its a retail outlet in Udon that has been set up to provide a service to the expat community in Udon and surrounding provinces. Obviously the owners identified a need in the business plan / analysis etc for the expanding expat population here.

The majority of products and particularly some brand name stock Eg Branston Pickles, Sharwoods Curry mixes etc can not be found in Udon with the local retail outlets such as Tesco , Big C , Makro .

They can be found in Villa, Emporium or Siam Paragon supermakets in Bangkok.

Other stock is directly imported from the UK, at fully imported prices that reflect the associated costs.

Judging on the comments in this thread, there has been overwelming support for this niche supermarket. It has definately generated a change in the way some locals consume products. Its provided the products and incredients for many to cook at home again, both to save a few bob due to reduced exchange rates and also many of us still enjoy cooking our favourite meals from our departed lands.

On top of the supermarket stock, it has a great deli , providing some excellent rolls, subs , etc with hickory chicken , hams, and a range of fresh salads to go with them.

My summary would be, this has been a successful small business that has started in the worlds biggest recession, it survived the honeymoon period and continues to have repeat customers , who are happy with the products, snacks, and of course the prices.

I assure you there are many locals who do watch their pennies and that is respected, but they also go there to buy some specialised cheeses, sausages, and of course their Branstons !

Thanks to Jon and the team for providing this outlet.

From my perspective , ( and sorry for hi-jacking your thread Jon )

this is what happens when you pay for advertising - in any of Lees ( Udon Maps owner ) advertising platforms.

Lee starts the thread for you as a paying sponsor and invites you to promote your business .
( check the 1st post on this thread )

without paying advertisers Udon Map probably wouldnt exist . unless the owner likes to work for FREE :D

by regularly posting whats new , different , changed , it keeps the customers that are unable to pop by the shop every day , fully informed of anything they wish to buy . but with a little humor added it makes it non 100% commercial and a little fun

Udon map members that are not interested in reading this thread , should simply ignore it and read something they are interested in .

The Librarian .

You could have saved yourself the criticism if you had re read the previous posts, this thread belongs to the business and has every right to advertise there products, and also engage in meaningless banter with their patrons. Those of us familiar with this thread look forward to the updates and jokes that accompany them :D

Well my 2 cents worth is they have products not normally available in ISEAN area at all. I've now been there buying on 4 different occasions and I'm 264KM from Udon. So I e-mail him (PM or web site) direct as to what I wish to have on my 3 month visits to Udon, and within reason he has it. Great business for the area and hope it continues to expand.

Lock Man !

Crickey 264 km to travel to get home, thats some track.

I would double check the expiry dates on the stuff you bought, they might be off by the time u get home again !

Where do you live Lock Man?
Perhaps you could open a Chern Chim franchise in your area.

Nice idea but I came to quit working; not do something different. And at 35-40KM from Mukdahan in a village, Farangs are few and farther between, although I do pick up stuff when I go there for some of them. There is possibly someone going to do something in Ubon I believe.

OK, we will just bash you for making reference to "McDonalds" and "juicy quarter pounder" in the same bloody sentence.

I saw them 'golden arches' for the first time when I was driving past a couple of days ago (I have been in the land of the friggin' things for a few weeks) and I almost missed the brake pedal, threw up and sh!t myself at the same time. I mean Udon really needs this?

BTW, nice to see that Chern Chim has a nice wee fridge full of their snacks and comestibles at the middle shop in the departure lounge at UTH. It makes for a pleasant change from the usual snacks... and the ladies working that franchise are very, VERY easy on the eye. So much so, my wife has commented on my new habit of checking in at least 2 hours before my frequent hops to BKK.

I noticed a Thai chap having a pie and Magners yesterday before the TG lunchtime flight. He was wearing a Smedvig (drillers) shirt so obviously cut his teeth in the North Sea.

Keep up the good work chaps! We will wean these heathens off their somtam and larb yet!

THANKS TAMADA.
alot of people have commented on the chern chim stock in the airport and even more about the beauties that serve it , suffice to say the interviews didnt take long.
Got the first xmas turkeys in today and they look good - boneless 3-4 kg breasts at 440 per kilo (10bt less than Tops )also lamb chops in but be quick these are flying out quicker than we can get them in.
