If you're looking for a 165,000 baht coffee machine, look no further than Aroma Coffee Shop. I didn't buy the machine today, but I did buy some beans......95 baht for 250g, ground to your specification. And because they're a new store, they'll make a cup of coffee from your beans with one of those high priced machines for your tasting pleasure.
I'd guess they have 20 different varieties/roasts of beans, both Thai and imported. Obviously the imported are more expensive, but if Blue Mountain or that sort is what you're looking for, this place has it.
The place is located: As you arrive at the center circle from the statue circle, take the 3 o'clock turn (5 o'clock takes you to Makro). The place is about 10 meters from the center circle on your left hand side. The lovely lady speaks some English.

As an absolute follower of freshly ground coffee I was in the comfortable situation to be able to buy excellent coffee beans in Vientiane, Lao, in the coffee shop at one of the entrances of the Salat Tao shopping mall, coffee directly from a plantation in Lao.
Nowadays I don't frequent Lao anymore and I was desperately looking for coffee beans. I missed the post by Parrot so just 2 months ago I discovered Udon Delices at the ring road. Excellent shop for expat stuff like French and Italian cheese and sausage, wine in cartons, many interesting items.
But, next to it you find Coffee Company, from the same owner.
Result is that you can buy coffee beans or freshly ground coffee in 4 Thai varieties, roasted by themselves.
I tried it and come back each time, price about 600 Baht/kg, for the strongest version. I buy beans as I prefer to grind myself before making coffee, better taste.

Cheers
Joe

The choice of coffee in Udon has come on in leaps and bounds in the last 10 years.

Who can remember the choice you had, all you had was Nescafe instant, or that muck strained through grannys old tights, with a dash of condensed milk.

Concur.........been buying coffee at Udon Delise for well over a year now and really like it. Will give Aroma Coffee Shop a try since it comes highly recommended. Always nice to have an alternate source. I enjoy visiting Udon Delise but can't resist the temptation to stock up on the cheese and other delicacies available. Their frozen baggettes are great. Just thaw, put in a hot oven for 10 minutes or so and it is like fresh bread.

Prenders88 is right. The options just keep on increasing.

I had a very good cuppuccino and a sausage fancy at Auntie Annies in Central, at lunchtime with a mate and my missus.
The same work of art Val had in his cup. I had an attack of the vapours when this Uni student walked past, with a fine set of jugs, quite the biggest I've ever seen on a Thai girl. Coffee and the sight of those huge melons won't help my hypertension.

Have no idea if it's a reasonable price, but decaf is available at Ngee Soon. 435bt for Maxwell & 430bt for Nescafe.

Thanks Papa! If I knew the weight I could tell if it's a good deal or not. Looks like 400% of US prices. Can drink 3 in 1 for 2.68 Baht per cup. I'd have to get 160 teaspoons (cups) out of this jar for 430 Baht to be equal and that doesn't include the cream and sugar. Ain't gonna happen, so I guess the old tightwad will stick with 3 in 1 caffeinated and stay in a cloud of confusion all day.

No offense to your coffee drinking habits, semper, but there's coffee and then there's Nescafe instant (pseudo-coffee).
Bon Cafe makes an instant decaf......if the Udon store doesn't carry it, they may be able to get it from Bangkok.
Birdy is a Nescafe competitor (I think owned by Ajinomoto). I've seen Birdy decaf instant 3 in 1 packs, but can't remember where.

When I first came to Thailand, I drank Nescafe 3 in 1 because there were no alternatives in Udon. I don't think there was a single coffee shop in town in 1996. If you ordered coffee anywhere, it was certain to be 3 in 1. I remember seeing something that said the % of coffee was in the sub-15% per pack....and if you look closely, I'd challenge anyone to show me the coffee as opposed to the cream/sugar.
With the plethora of coffee shops around town (Bon Cafe/Aroma are dealers), you're bound to find someone who has decaf.
Life's too precious to drink bad coffee every day! JMHO.
