Collateral Damage?

Postby jackspratt » October 18, 2010, 9:53 am

Food for thought?

Executed man's remains returned to family

The remains of Colin Campbell Ross have been returned to his family 88 years after his execution.

He was executed in 1922 for the murder of schoolgirl Alma Tritschke.

Mr Ross was was posthumously pardoned by the Victorian Governor in 2008, after DNA tests showed a hair sample found did not match that of the murdered girl.

Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls today honoured a commitment to return Mr Ross's remains, which were exhumed from a mass grave at Pentridge Prison.

"If ever we needed a illustration of the injustice of the death penalty this is it," he said............

He is certainly not the first, and undoubtedly will not be the last innocent person to be executed.

I find it odd that so many who are against capital punishment have no problem crushing the skull of a fetus whipping up the soft bits with a blender head and sucking the lifeless body out through a suction tube.

This is the typical argument of someone who has no logic but appeals to emotion. The question of when a neonate becomes a sentient being is certainly open to argument.

One famous person once said the Law is an Ass, now while DNA NOW can convict or exonerate a person, when many people were executed that particular brand of scientific knowledge was not even a gleam in someones eye.
As time goes on we may find other previously proven information to be suspect, if one goes back not that long ago in real terms the earth was flat, and guess what the Christan world was fighting the Moslem world, nowt changes does it really.
So stating that abortion is worse than or even the same as execution is not really acceptable as abortion and the death sentence has been carried out by humans for at least the last 5-6000 years, so what's new. NOW we can beat ourselves up about finding out that we killed the wrong person, a tad late but then what's new about that either.
We are not infallible neither are we God.....We learn and hopefully will not repeat that kind of mistake again, do not forget the final quote
To err is human forgive DIVINE.. ................

The lapse in logic is that it's a humanitarian disgrace to kill an unrepentant, admitted mass murderer by lethal injection, but perfectly acceptable to whip up a fetus shake only because the baby hadn't taken its first breath and is unable to tell you how much it hurts.

That, fellow posters, is some twisted logic. Glad I don't have to live with that hypocrisy.

well, DNA evidence may or may not exclude a suspect from a crime.. The fact that a murdered individual doesn't have DNA from the suspect but from another person could mean that the suspect didn't get any DNA evidence on the victim.. Yes, no doubt that some people are wrongfully executed. Is the "fix" for that to do away with the death penalty and warehouse a murderer or rapist for life??

On abortion.. The "pro-choice" folks call for "a woman's right to choose." Well, other than serious health risk, rape or forced incest, I imagine the woman who gets an abortion may have made the "choice" (a bad one) not to use any birth control at all. With the many and various birth control devices/medications out in the world, I would truly question a woman's intellect and maturity if they find themselves 3 months pregnant and needing an abortion. Of course, in the case of pregnant teens, it certainly doesn't matter much what you make available to them or what complete education you give them on sexual matters, most teenagers cannot rationally deal with responsible sex until they get older.. Try talking rationally to an irrational teenager ( their usual responses, "you don't understand me, I hate you"!!).. While a teen may act quite maturely, in general they are irrational until they get past 18 years of age or so and gain more knowledge.

I don't have a solution to the issue of abortions.. A heavy-handed statist solution would be mandatory IUD's at a particular age. Frankly having had family members who made the "wrong choices" and had to get abortions, I believe it is a tremendously damaging event in a young girls (or any females') life both physically and psychologically.

Good post frazee.
I'm not suggesting abortion is evil or unnecessary.
I was merely commenting on the hypocrisy of valuing one life (a convicted murderer) while simultaneously discarding another truly innocent life without batting an eye.

If someone is staunchly anti-capital punishment and pro-abortion -- they're a hypocrite. There's a lot of them.

Yes

There is no correlation between the death penalty and abortion - except that they are heavily debated issues. But as wisely said above by rufus, where you cannot argue on the moral justification for the state murdering some (too often innocent) person, throw in the red herring of abortion.

I would far rather live with my hypocrisy than that special place you seems to be yours Tex.

There is no correlation between them?Says who? Those that ''choose'' to use before birth and after birth as an argument about taking a life!Abortion is an act of extreme selfishness by an individual that thinks only about themselves. The death penalty is not an unjust penalty, except where the justice process has broken down or is perverted.Perhaps a law handing the death penalty to those that choose to commit murder by unjustly convicted some innocent person would cut down on ''collateral damage''!
The life that stirs within a pregnant women,is truly innocent, perhaps the DP would be appropiate for all those involved in its taking?
Why should society pay for the incarceration of those that harm it.I favor rehab facilities for the young that commit crimes other than murder and a society where the victims claim restitution and/or death to the felons,by passing sentence themselve, either branding, loss of body parts or death. No incarceration except during trials!

That should put all you PC liberals into a roar   You couuld pay for your healthcare and save the pension funds with the savings from not building and staffing excess prisons! \:D/ \:D/

You - and I am talking about the US here, maybe the only western liberal democracy that still murders it's citizens as a matter of course - could save a lot more money by getting rid of the multitude of crazy laws and compulsory sentencing which condemns a petty criminal to life without parole for stealing a sandwich a third time.

That should stir up the loony arch-conservatives. :D :D

Never heard of a 3 strikes law for petty crimes like sandwich stealing! What are you referring to?Petty crimes are misdemeanors not felonies in the modern era!It would have to nearly be a truckload of sandwiches to qualify for a felony!

The sandwich is not the issue, but look here if you are interested.

This story is far from unique.

But we are getting away from capital punishment.

  You introduced the topic ''collateral damage'',not death penalty! Also your the one that brought up 3 strikes for ''stealing a sandwich'',which happened to be not true!he was convicted of breaking and entering a church, just because he claimed it was for food, doesn't stretch to ''stealing a sandwich''!He was a multiple felon before the 3rd felony and convicted during a time when the reactionary 3 stike mandatory was passed because of the proven and happening residual rate of offenses committed by multiple felons released back into society in California,my home state!

Be interesting to hear how you would have handled the case,if it was your choice!!

Personally,I can't think of a situation where stealing is necessary or acceptable, can you? :-k
