Coming to Udon in 4 weeks! Where to stay?

Postby J » July 23, 2006, 12:59 am

I am coming to Udon with my Father, I am in my early 30's with my Father in his mid 50's.

I wanted to know where in your opinion is the best/most convenient place to stay. Walking short to medium distances is fine for him, bit too long (over a mile in heat) would be pushing it. I am looking for a place that has AC and maybe a pool, still close to shopping and entertainment.

I will be getting 2 rooms, I had looked at the Udon Thai house but noticed it was pretty far out there as in too far to walk.

This is my first trip to Thailand, we will be in Udon for 6 days. My Father met my Mother there 32 years ago, so he is returning to see the Ramasan military base and other nostalgic things. Do you have any suggestions as far as places to visit or avoid while in Udon?

Thanks in advance for your help, you seem like a helpful bunch.
Actually now that I think of it, ANY suggestions are welcome!
(sorry for writing a book)

Try the Irish Clock. No pool but well appointed air-conditioned rooms, great staff, cold Guiness and good food. Very close to major shopping and the Udon night market. Small helpful laundry just up the roadf. Other bars and hotels nearby.
Worked out at AUD$30 per night and 2 good English breakfasts included.

J, if you really want a pool (outdoor) try the Charoen Hotel. It's within walking distance - about 400-500 metres - of shopping centre etc. Large well established hotel. Rooms are about 800 baht per night. It has live music/disco in a separate building at the back of the car park, so no noise problems in the rooms.

Otherwise the Charoensri Grand Royal, right next to the shopping centre, though I guess the prices there would be about 1200 baht per night.

See other thread " Charoen Hotel", which has info on both the above.

Places to avoid - Mr Tong's!!

Welcome back, or perhaps it's your first time back.. The Ramasun Station is still there albeit occupied by the Thai military.. I'm sure your Dad will find things changed significantly since those days of probably being a "ditty-bopper" many years ago... PM your Dad's name, we may have served there together..
I agree with the earlier post.. If you want to be down town then the Charoen Hotel or Sri Charoen Grand by the mall or even the Irish Clock (advertised on the website) are quite good..

J,

My husband and I stayed at the Charoen last November (05) -- the junior suite was 1500 baht a day and gave us plenty of room (bedroom, bath, living room and breakfast area. The pool (with outdoor bar) is quite nice, the staff is more than adequately bilingual, and the breakfast is good, both Thai and Western.

My husband was at Ramasun Station -- PM us also with your dad's name (sounds like the same timeframe). Your dad probably will remember the Cobra patch that Stephen designed.

The wife and I stay at the Charoensri Grand Royal on Saturday nights for some alone time away from the family or the time or two that I have been there for the monthly meeting. If you stay there, when you check in ask to fill out a "VIP" card. Then you get a discount. I forget how much the discount is. However, the last few times I have gotten the "we only have suites available". Do not know if that was true but took the suite anyway as it is a very comfortable room and the sife likes the suites. That is 2000 baht I think.
