Paul,
Welcome to the forum.
This is an impossible question to answer :D . It depends on so, so many 'personal' things. What you & your family normally like to do. How much time you are planning on spending with the family in Khumphawapi. What do you plan to do when you are not with the family...etc, etc, etc... :D :D
There are really loads of threads on here about restaurants in Udon - but not many on Kh..w - which I think says a lot!!
Thailand & Udon is still really child friendly so it is more a case of deciding what you & the family want to do rather than worrying if the kids will be accepted - as they will anywhere you go.
Personally I would stay in Udon & hire a car & then can do whatever you & your family like - but that is just me!!! :D :D

I was there in October 2007 with TG and her two small girls we stayed at BB Resort. It was great and has a very nice pool and restaurant, ping pong, tennis and full gym and play area for kids. And it has Lek Car Rental. Also liked Nong Prajak Park. Or try Bamboo Garden it has good location between Udon Thani and Kumphawapi.

Welcome chob123, get a place to stay in Udon with a pool, hire a car for the week, check out Leks(free child seats with cars !!) and other rental places mentioned on here, short drive into kumpawapi to visit the relatives, having a car gives you freedom go where you want...plenty to see with-in a week, early evenings at nong prajak park with a decent play area for the kids too, make sure you got a tough childs buggy with decent wheels as some of the pavements with obstacles and road's are not as smooth as you would like them to be when pushing one around.(something you notice more when you have little kiddies in tow.!!)lol, and don't forget to stop off and show the children the monkeys .
