good on ya Stan for a more in depth rethink of the situation...I never intend to offend anyone on this website, merely throw out a different perpsective on matters as I see it from afar, which hopefully have the person look at matters in a different light. The control freak thing was merely a comment to make you re look at yourself and your intentions, and the situation. I am pleased to see now you have done that, and have come up with some other new ideas in regards your daughters future, that werent there the other day...my mission is accomplished..
control freak or not, your love for your daughter truely shines thru..

Stan.
How can you be a control freak. When you are leaving the last word to your daughter !
Have you posted on KK Maps yet ? There must must be a lot of expats there with local info and advice that you can use if Udon Maps is anything to go by.
Glad to read that you are keeping all your options open and that you are working you way through this together.
You sound like a great dad in a happy family.
All the best

is this proposal of you moving with her a continuation of the issues with being grounded a few months ago etc??

Absolutely not!We have not had a problem regarding helmut since. As i see it ,the point was made and she has even commented that two of her friends now wear their helmuts because she does =D> and ,of course they don't want to be stopped as she is permitted to ride around with them more

I don't know how much you followed the posts regarding the grounding, but it was the only serious grounding that she has experienced in our 12+ years together and her attitude and acceptance during it,cut it more than in half!

I am very thankful for the way it worked, now my worry is her being a passenger on M/B's everyday  I would prefer her to have her own MB versus being a passenger, but she is not yet interested! That will probably change at Uni time,we will see!

Stan . How about an update on this . All the results came out last week. Was your daughter accepted by KK or Maha uni?
Are you still moving?
The three candidates I took for interviews did better than we thought. My wife's niece, as we thought got a place offered, so is starting out on her chosen career hoping to qualify as a lawyer, of her two friends one got an immediate offer and hopes to be a pharmacist. The other has been advised of a place but needs extra tuition, cost 50k, which her parents are paying to enable her to get a degree in teaching .So, not a bad result for them. Hope your daughter was as lucky .

She decided that KK was not of her liking after viewing the campus and dorm,I fully agree!

MSU is a lurking possibility, but we have not sent the testing fee, although she has filled out the forms!

We will be visiting Chiang Mai next month to take an English entrance exam for an International program,Payap University!

I have been in contact regularly with a 45 yr. old falang that works in admissions and is studying there also. They have an International dormitory where all the students speak English and he has invited us to visit the dorm, the students and audit classes!

We were going to Bangkok to take the TOEFL exam which is used as a marker to qualify a student to enter International classes in Thai Universities, but he suggested that we save the 5000baht cost and take their English entrance exam(PEAT)500 baht, since we were going to visit the campus anyway.

The exams are given on the first and third Wed.of each month. He is and the other students are in the middle of their midterm exams at the moment,so I have not been in contact with him for a couple of weeks.I plan on contacting him next monday to plan whether we will test on the 5th or the 19th.

Plan on spending a few days in CM and then a couple of days in Chiang Rai!

I'm not sure whether my daughters English skills are equal to the task or not, this trip will give us some direction!

She didn't get accepted to any of the Bangkok schools which is what I anticipated, although we didn't apply for any International programs and I certainly don't want to move there, but will as a last resort, especially since the living costs, plus UNI costs of sending her their alone would be extremely high!

The International dorm is the draw for me.I think she would like some autonomy anyway and my reasoning for moving was to help her stay ''living in the language'' as her major will be English. If she has a living situation that provides that, then I will probably stay in NK!

IMO,It is such a waste to see students in English classes, but spend all their free time with people that only speak Thai!

So you might even end up in Chiang Mai then? Whatever happens good luck to both you and daughter. It must be an unsettling time for all your family .

There is a slight possibility,if she gets into that program, but hopefully not.I can't think of many things I dislike more than moving!

NK really suits me,but after the daughter gone, the living environment might change. We will see what happens.

I have never been to CM or CR!

I don't think CM or CR have much to recommend them Stan. However that general area has much in its favour over Udon. There are some very nice towns around the North, but on a hill is better than in a valley as the pollution can get quite bad in the Hot season.
I think that the university is pretty much on the eastern edge of Chang Mai itself so that might give you a few options other than the city itself if a move had to be made..
Lampang is a bit far away (about 50 kms I think) & is well worth a visit (maybe stay a night there rather than CM) if you do end up over that way.

Stan, Speaking from MY OWN Experiences, You have'nt missed a lot, CM ( I was there some 25 years ago, it was quiet THEN,Now I believe from a friend who lives there it's HECTIC to say the least.)Also quite dirty & The PING River should be renamed The PONG River,It stank all those years ago, Heaven knows what it is like now..........CR,I was there 7 years ago ( 2004 ) for a friends wedding,Not a lot happening there,A LOT Quieter than CM,Also Dirty in my view, the Mekhong TRICKLES through the town centre,There is a small ex-pat community ( Bars )and a redlight area ( which I know your NOT interested in anyway, but it is there.... But Not a lot else.....Lampang, Worth a stop enroute A Huge lake with restaurants surroundig it,had some decent food in one of them,The sceneary around the North in general is very nice though.....

Ideally she would get into the university, the International dormitory and we would stay in NK as .although I have never been there,CM sounds like a better visiting place than a living place to me.

I have an American acquaintence friend that sold up here in NK ,moved to CR and built a place there. He has touted the local University,MAE FAH LUANG!They claim an International program, but I think they mix alot of Thai courses into their program.Their website is in Thai.so I don't see how they attract native English speakers, and they only have 150 seats!

It is relatively inexpensive compared to the other International programs, doesn't have an International dorm.
As long as I was driving North anyway and that I have never been in the North,I thought I would give them a looksee and visit Steve if he is around!

Just for info.Mae Fah Luang University does have an International dorm and students are required to stay there there first year, and they do have an extensive website in English,so I was wrong.Definitely will check them out.Fees seem to be about 1/3 of the fees charged by private International schools.Definitely a consideration, but not the most important concern!

At least I would have beer money left over!lol

Hi Stan. We're back in town for a few days and I just caught your posts. I am very familiar with Payap University and believe it would be an excellent choice for your daughter, especially if she plans on eventually ending up in the States. They are very well connected in the US. In the US I belonged to a Thai-Lao fellowship group and we had frequent visits from people from Payap. I met their President, Dr. Takengrangsarit, in fact had breakfast with him. A very likable fellow. He hinted that I should consider teaching at the U but I shot that down fast. They also sent a troupe of folk dancers on a tour of the US and on their visit to Las Vegas I spoke to some members of the troupe and was impressed with their command of the English language. They also have exchange agreements, both students and faculty, with many universities worldwide and many in the US.

The University is connected with the Christian Church and I quizzed Pradit on this, being how Thailand is so overwhelmingly Buddhist. He assured me that their education is largely non sectarian. They don't preach religion or try to convert their students to Christianity. Their goal is to prepare their students for international careers.

I know this is an exciting time for you and your family. I remember sweating through my kids' college choices with them but was always careful not to dictate to them where they should go and it worked out fine.

If you do take them up on a campus visit remember the dog friendly hotel that I found in Chiang Mai. I can dig out the details or you can look up my post from about last February on this or the other forum, can't remember which.

Good luck to you and your family!
