Cookies

Postby Chriss » August 6, 2010, 9:13 am

Can anyone tell me why my cookies shut down (not sure thats the right terminology) every now and then. Sometimes when I boot up the PC my logins and, when I hit the tab key, passwords are remembered then next time I have to enter the information again.
Any ideas....?
Using MS Vista.
Run malware, virus and spyware checks all OK....

I would think it also depends on what browser (FireFox, Explorer etc.) & how you have that 'set up' through options.
If you use something like CCleaner that can also remove cookies & passwords, depending on how that is set up.
It is a good idea to delete cookies now & again as they can easily get corrupted over time.
Usernames & passwords tend to be saved by your Browser rather than anywhere else. They can be easily 'examined' there as well so it is a facility that should be used with extreme caution on anything that you would prefer not to fall into anyone else's hands.
In FireFox TOOLS is the place to examine your settings etc...

Using IE 8 Bob, and yes I have used CCleaner but a few days ago, could there be a setting whereby the cookies are deleted automatically after some many days in either of these programs??

I am not very familiar with IE Chris.
Suggest that you have a look under the options/tools on it. I use FireFox & there are a whole raft of different settings that you can apply - depending what you want. Personally I have FF set so that every time I close it all my cookies are deleted. That way I know that I am starting from fresh every day.
On the Password front there are a number of different settings too - including using a global setting.
The reason that I mention all this is that every time I receive a serious upgrade to FF I need to go back in & re-set everything to what I want as it always comes with the 'standard' settings.

It sounds like you are suffering from an intermittent problem, rather than a general deletion. I would think that the main candidate from that is probably the site you are trying to access & that it just doesn't recognise the old cookie as being valid for some reason.

Been doing some checking with windows updates and this has only been happening since I upgraded to IE8, so I'll have a good poke around the options see what I can come up with.

BTW - I tried Firefox and for some reason found it very slow, I had both FF and IE running and IE returned results faster. Not sure if this was a one off, I uninstalled FF. Maybe I'll try again.

Make sure AutoComplete is turned on in IE 8.

Go to Tools > Internet Options and click open the Content tab. Under "AutoComplete" click settings and check the box titled "User names and passwords on forms."

Also, in the General tab under "Browsing History" make sure "delete browsing history on exit" isn't checked, and click the Settigns button to further customize how your cookies are stored

Chriss, remember you cannot "delete browsing history on exit" AND keep "autocomplete" on. It's the one or the other.

I prefer, like Bob, to delete browser history on exit, that way I'm sure all is gone and next time all is new. You can (in IE) exclude favourite pages from deleting so they will start up fast.
Keeping passwords in a computer is risky, someone could use it in a (for you) wrong way.

If you still encounter problems with log in/automatically log out let me know, I have found a solution for that in IE.

Cheers

Been checking daily and so far all is back to normal. Must have been the default settings in IE8 when I upgraded. Where are the passwords kept, in which folder? I use the 'remember me' options on websites so when I enter a user name and hit the tab key it auto fills the password in ****'s. And I must say I never use the 'remember me' boxes on my online banking.

Go to TOOLS<Internet options<Content<Auto complete
There you find all settings for auto complete, passwords and deleting browser history.

OK, new twist to this, the cookies only delete when I run the laptop battery down and it shuts down.
Any ideas where I can change an option?

Chris I believe (it is certainly the case with FireFox) that the browser program makes some decisions based on your setting when you tell it to close down normally (or even just click on the X in the top right hand corner). Maybe it does not have time to make these 'saves' if it closes due to a flat battery. I am not sure that any of the programs are clever enough to 'know' that the battery is about to fail before it does, so I don't think settings are going to help you - sorry!! :D
