Credit Card/ATM Scam - Udon Thani

Mr.Kiatchai Tangkawatchara, a 48 year old man from Amphur Muang Udon Thani, informed the police yesterday that he lost money via an ATM machine. He said yesterday he got a phone call from a man claiming to be an officer at the General Bank. The man told Mr.Kiatchai that somebody used his credit card to buy something at a department store and asked him to verify the transaction at a nearby ATM machine. Mr. Kiatchai believed what the guy said and did as the man asked. The man told him to access the bank account and enter the amount of money to cancel everything.

After he finished Mr.Kiatchai checked his bank balance. He discovered that he had just lost 5,980 baht. He tried calling the man back but the line was disconnected. Police are investigating.

About this time last year me & TG were staying in Lampang for a couple of days.
One day she gets a phone call & gets VERY excited.
My spoken Thai is pretty poor but my listening comprehension is fair. After about 5 minutes of chatting on the phone she goes towards her bag & I have gathered she is going for her bank cards.
Now she has 2 accounts. One has money in it, the other has only ever a couple of 100 baht in it. Never been sure why, maybe to convince family & friends she has sod all if they want to borrow some. :D
Anyway, I grab the cards & hand her the one with only a few baht in.... she glares at me, but takes it & starts rattling off numbers into the phone. After a while she finishes & excitingly tells me she has won 20,000 baht.
Yeah, says me & I bet they wanted to put it directly into your account & for that they needed your pin number too didn't they????
Yes, she says......
No they do not says I it is a con - do you need mamas pin number when you transfer money to her???? No...she says....
So, when are they going to put into your account???? Today is the reply....
OK we check tomorrow at an ATM.....surprise, surprise she is still waiting for it to arrive.... :D :D

I am not surp[rised Thai's get scammed, as if one watches them use an ATMK, it is like watching a kid in a candy store, one needs patience with a Capital P. Afterwards on more than one occasion they leave something behind, the slip or even the card.
Thai's can be so gullible, it is almost painful on occasions when they tell you the story.

Scammers, Spammers, Phishers and Boiler rooms... all over the world. Thai's are not any more naive than many other folks.. Remember, it wasn't that long ago that huge boiler room operations were busted in Bangkok where English speaking expats were calling Oz, NZ, UK, Canada and trolling "Pension and Investment Plans" on gullible older folks..
for a Thai, "easy money", "you won" are hooks that snare the fish..

 Yes yes, there are gullible people in every country of the World, but ignorance in in Thais stands out to me more than anyplace else I have been!Probably because they are not educated to think and until they get ''burned'',they will go for simple scams like giving up financial info over the phone in a moment of excitement about getting a big reward.

I can't count the many times that I have seen the pin code they put in a ATM ,as there is no attempt to cover it up!

To that comment I beg to differ, Thais by nature are not yet in the 21st century, their banks certainly are not neither are they in terms of awareness of all sorts of possibilites.
I had a bank card and cheque book 43 years ago, my wifes mother just got a cheque book you would think the bank had just given her 1 million baht, she soon emptied the account. She did not iunderstand to her cheques meant money she has over 15 left and wondered why she had no money.
Oh well the learning curve was pretty steep I must say, in fact anything that requires forward thinking or even lateral thinking in many cases seems to be the biggest obstacle, per see Thais are not stupid just uneducated in certain facets of modern day living which even filters into driving and those simple skills we in the west almost take for granted.

I'll differ with you on that, too. I know a few people in the State that operate on the same principle..."I can't be out of money, I still have checks left!" My ex wife is one of them. One of the reasons she's an ex.
