Cure for Toenail Fungus?

meths sure gives it the hurry along also..is it on your fingernails Sem?? check with a magnifying glass you fingerprints for unusual redness and weepage..
NO, this is serious stuff. I know it's gross, but it's very common, especially in Thailand. There are numerous websites available detailing home remedies, and others trying to peddle natural healing medications and creams...but they don't work. Most of these sites appear to be very well put together and informative, but they're designed just to sell you something. Many of these remedies are like most of the garbage that is sold in Thailand...making outrageous claims of effectiveness, but with absolutely no clinical evidence that it works. So I have decided to head to the hospital and see a doctor to get the medication that I know for sure cures it because I have used it before. Thanks for all of you comments and advice. I was hoping to hear back from someone who had actually used a local over-the-counter medication that did the trick, but so far no mention of it.

ok now I see a pic, I can say my mama has the same thing..its a fungi as I took her to a foot specialist here in NZ. He cut most of it off the toenails, but didnt give her any ointment.. my old lady used to do abit of swmming in public pools, you know old people trying to keep fit, but my guess it was her diet that caused it..she use to just eat meat and spuds, no vege or fruit, and drunk vodka by the truck load, now I have her on the wine, and I cook, so things are looking better in the toe department...Sem I would say you will have to cut all the dead wood off, if you know what i mean, and try and grow some new nails..I dont think Lamsil is the right thing for the job..

Thanks for the comments maaka! My dermatologist prescribed Lamisil tablets 250 mg once a day for 12 weeks, and sure enough I grew new nails fungus free. About 5 years later I somehow picked up the fungus again. Lamisil cream won't knock it out...it has to be the tablets taken internally. The doctor had me do a blood test for my liver since this med can affect liver function in some people, but no problems.

If you believe him, OT has considerable gynecological experience, although no formal qualifications. :D

I've had a dodgy big toe nail for a while now. My friend's a Pediatrist and she recommended Curanail. It's pretty pricey for a kit at £25. But after 4 weeks I can report it is clearing up the funghi. Hopefully It'll be gone in a few weeks.

OT was looking at having the fish foot spa done today, but in the back of my mind I had wazzas post in mind. I read all through everything about the foot spa in question. It said there was no risk of any infection. I'm talking about in the UK where you can't just open shop and start dishing out dodgy treatments. And it only costs a tenner, which hardly puts it in the trendy market, more like billingsgate market. I was thinking of putting my jerk in the tank when noone was looking.

Tea Tree Oil and White Vinegar did not work on me. Better to try homeopathic medicine like Zerofungus or advanced medical procedure like Laser Treatment. Proven tested by health experts to remove totally the fungus on the nail/toenail. Skip on trying home remedies as it was doesn't treat at all. Possible chance to have an infections.

For home remedies, warm water mixed with white vinegar are said to be effective. For tropical products, the oil Fungusil said more convenient to used and very effective to remove fungus and kill it's root. Hope this idea helps you.

Jai, I sent you a PM yesterday morning in reply to your PM to me, and I see that it is still in my "outbox". So, please take a look there to see my response.

Would you beleive that LISTERINE will clear-up toe nail infection. Yes, LISTERINE one buye from the chemist. Just put it on with a cotton bud and after a couple of weeks you will see new nail growing and pushing the fungus out as it grows. You may have to do it over 2-4 treatments but, it most certainly works. I had tried all expensive liquids from the chemist but would never clear it up. Cheers Mudguard.

Slow news day......but good news on the fingernail fungus front. After battling a problem with two nails......using a variety of creams and ointments......and just about to the point of going the dreaded pill route, I bought a small tub of Vicks. Applied a few times a day and always before going to bed and, for the first time in several years, my nails are back to normal. 60 baht....and I have enough left over for the next cold.

That's good news Parrot---the laser treatment in Australia is quite cheap and the results in most cases very good----comes with a guarantee of them redoing it if it doesn't work---unfortunately doesn't seem to have got to Thailand yet---Singapore is the nearest.
How many days treatment with Vicks did it take before you managed to rid yourself of the fungi

I am the OP and I went to a dermatologist and was prescribed Itraconazole capsules 100mg to be taken after each meal and before bedtime. Take them for one full week then three weeks off and repeat until the fungus disappears and new nails are grown. Took me about 5 months to grow new nails and now after two years there is still no sign of the fungus. The cost from the dermatologist was 20 baht per capsule, but only 10 baht purchased directly from the pharmacy with no prescription.

I had a very bad case of fungus and all ten toenails were totally destroyed. I tried everything first and I have to say that this medication is a modern miracle of science.

Not about fungi but I notice Khun Parrot mentions Vick . Is that the vapour rub? I've never seen that in Thailand and I prefer that to the Thai Tiger Balm. Where can I get it please? Also the lozenges if seen.

Hi JSJ! I took Lamisil back in the US several years ago and it worked, but it was very expensive and the toenail infection returned when I moved to Thailand. The Itraconazole worked wonders and within 3-4 months I had brand new perfect toenails and I've never had a problem since. I think that was two years ago. The meds are very inexpensive and there are two dosing methods. My doctor advised me to do the one week and skip three weeks method. Read this website: http://www.rxlist.com/sporanox-drug/ind ... dosage.htm

Treatment of Onychomycosis

Toenails with or without fingernail involvement: The recommended dose is 200 mg (2 capsules) once daily for 12 consecutive weeks.

Treatment of Onychomycosis

Fingernails only: The recommended dosing regimen is 2 treatment pulses, each consisting of 200 mg (2 capsules) b.i.d. (400 mg/day) for 1 week. The pulses are separated by a 3-week period without SPORANOX® (itraconazole capsules) .

Make sure that you do a drug interaction check if you are taking other drugs. Use this website for that: http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.html

The pharmacies have imported brand names which are very expensive, but I used the much lesser expensive locally made meds and they worked great. Hope this helps!

I bought my Itraconazole at a wholesale pharmacy in Nong Bua market just east of the UD Town McDonalds near the Nittayo Road and Nong Bua Road red light. The name of the medicine is Itra-Med by CMED Products and comes in a 10 capsule packet 100 mg each. A map is attached here for the pharmacy location.
