Recently here in Thailand a death of a teenager occurred which was blamed on an increasingly popular fashion accessory in the form of metal braces placed in the mouth. This death took place in Kon Kaen Province in the North-East of Thailand and according to forensic results from the girls autopsy, the death was caused by Tetanus due to the build up of rust on the braces.

There are now claims that the death of a 14 year old girl which occurred on Tuesday Morning is also down to fashion braces inside her mouth. The girl was rushed to Hospital after collapsing. Efforts to revive her at Hospital proved unsuccessful. The girl’s distraught mother, Khun Pangsee aged 38 confirmed the braces were installed 2 months ago and since then her daughter had become reserved and suffered from tiredness at times of the day when she would normally be an active and talkative person. It has not been confirmed what the cause of death is as yet and a post mortem examination is now underway to confirm if this is Thailand’s 2nd recorded death because of fashion braces.

When i look at these fashion braces they do look cheap and nasty, and do nothing to enhance good looks. IMO....do they actually work in straitening the teeth,.? i don't think so....as i don't think that is the purpose, what a odd fashion accessory.....someones cashing in on this trend and have been for a number of years.

Agree with you 100% bm.....they look absolutely terrible.
Saturday night went to a 99 baht barbecue place in Udon.They had a promotion of 3 large Heinekens for 209 baht.
The Heineken Promo girl looked a bit of a "leggy stunner" and when she filled my glass I thanked her.She smiled and I recoiled in horror.She had these braces in her teeth and looked like something out of "Hammer House of Horrors."
Witnout the braces she would have been a natural beauty so why do they feel the need for these accessories?

Sad news to hear about the young lady who died.

My neighbor's sister got braces for a cool 40,000 baht. "That's a bargain", she said.....as the price was nearly 70,000 just a few years ago. When I was having some crown work done a few years ago at one of the clinics on Srisuk Rd, there were 5+ students awaiting service everyday after school hours. There was an album on the counter with all the latest styles and colors!

70000baht..!! Ok so some are real then....and are put on to genuinely straighten the teeth be it just top or both.....but i am thinking that some are just bodged with poor materials on to get the desired effect for the 'in fashion' crowd......monthly visits are required to tighten and renews parts of the braces, could be upto 2 years before the teeth get finnished, and even then they will still need looking after for the rest of their lives.....most of the ones i have seen over the years seem poorly put on and a bit of a mess imo....possibly done by an unqualified orthodontist.
If done correctly using quality parts by qualified techs with monthly appointments all should be good....and you won't die of Tetanus due o rusty braces.

u can buy for approx 500 baht or so, copies ! for the fashion conscious !

Wondering if its these types that are being identified.

Most surgeries would include the personal hygiene programme needed to keep the oral cavity clean etc,.

Arrr ok thanks wazza.......got to be the 500 Baht 'specials' made from crap.....again some you see there don't seem to be anything wrong in the wearers teeth all look straight etc, you got to ask would they put a load of rusty nails in the mouth day and night just to 'think' they look good.

My better half has orthodontal braces for genuine reasons and the package includes all the personel hygiene , flossing, checks and reviews etc

Her teeth have certainly moved for the better.

ok, today i asked a gal that had them, and her's are real and for the proper purpose of straighten the teeth, which are nice enough already. not sure how long she has used them. but her's were not for fashion, though in conversation, she mentioned having them changed, the color, so still fashion conscious. though much better than the braces everyone dreaded when i grew up. and price, i can't imagine 40-70 K, as this gal is far from that price range. especially if thinking about changing color for a personal choice, that's a bit out of her living expense. installed and maintained by a dentist. hmm, let's see, change color of braces, or buy nice motorbike for cash.................. :-k

Most of them are paid for monthly as the Dentists have layby plans for them. a full treatment is 30,000 give or take a few 1000 due to the number of extractions and preparation time from the mould for the orginal placement set.

Every 3-4 months new braces need to be replaced as the teeth move etc, so thats when they also get a colour change and also the bands are coloured coded.

In BKK papers i have seen advertised in some clinics actual diamonds that can be placed in the braces.

But not the same horrors that my sister had in the 70's ! Think they are a lot more streamlined thesedays.

Sure it would be a set price for them.....To start x-rays will be taken of the offending teeth,and a plan put into place by the Dentist,included in the cost will be 'must have' monthly checks...this includes re-newing wires and the parts that are glued onto the teeth,it can take 15-24 months depending before the teeth are straightened....and after removal a plastic mold of the teeth will be made called a retainer and will have to be worn for the rest of the person life as the teeth will naturally slowy go back to were they where.....most people where them when sleeping....many colours are available for the braces including clear plastics....all at extra costs of course.
I would only go to a qualified orthandontist to have this procedure performed.... :badteeth:

Dont forget 1 added bonus for the guys is, their loved one looses a bit of weight as they tend to hurt a tad after the initial fittings and the appetite goes off.

BUT it also means other forms of personal communications need to be changed as sometimes oral communication just doesnt get the nod.

Sad news to hear about the young lady who died.

Sometimes it is a matter of fitting in with the latest fashion,sometimes ,in the case of those we perceive as already beautiful,it is a matter of self perception or self esteem.

I watch my daughter change her looks with odd hairdos and different looks that she posts to people she chats with on the computer.She says she thinks they make her look better! :-#

She says that it is a form of expressing they way she feels at different times!

I asked her to keep that thought if she starts thinking of tatoos :lol:
