Disappointing night out

Postby parrot » March 18, 2007, 8:45 pm

My wife and I revisited the Jan Pa Beer Garden last night (located on the ring road at grid C14 on udon.map). We ate there middish last year and enjoyed the meal. Sorry to say, the meal last night was a disappointment....perhaps reflective of what happens to so many restaurants around Udon. We arrived around 7 P.M., were met by a bevy of friendly beer girls, and quickly received our drinks. Shortly after ordering our four dishes, a waitress brought our rice. From what we could tell, the rice was probably prepared early in the day and withstood the heat of the day.....thus showing signs of spoiling. My wife requested new rice and the staff brought 2 fresh bowls without questions. The yam-wun-sen we ordered had 4 or 5 very dead (as in 'very old') shrimp, the paht-pak was mostly tasteless, and the squid in another dish were likewise probably beyond shelf-life. On the positive side, the friendly beer girls never allowed my beer glass to be less than half full. Good service as we remember it from last year, but the food has taken a big dive.

If you're in that area again go up the road a little C11 and try out the Pavillion (PA) opposite Harry's bar,we ate there several times the end of last year as it had just changed hands, the food was good at a resonable price, good service and live music 8)
